PEACE IN A WORLD OF CHAOS

One of the best newspaper cartoons of all time is Calvin and Hobbes. One day Calvin and Hobbes come marching into the living room early one morning. His mother is seated there in her favorite chair. She is sipping her morning coffee. She looks up at young Calvin. She is amused and amazed at how he is dressed. Calvin’s head is encased in a large space helmet. A cape is draped around his neck, across his shoulders, down his back and is dragging on the floor. One hand is holding a flashlight and the other a baseball bat.

“What’s up today?” asks his mom.
“Nothing, so far,” answers Calvin.
“So far?” she questions.
“Well, you never know,” Calvin says, “Something could happen today.” Then Calvin marches off, “And if anything does, by golly, I’m going to be ready for it!”

Calvin’s mom looks out at the reading audience and she says, “I need a suit like that!”

That’s the way many of us feel as we see the news and deal with life. Sometimes this world seems quite violent and people seem to be at each other’s throats. A suit like that would help, so we can say with Calvin, “Whatever may come my way, I’m going to be ready for it! Bring it on!”

Well, I don’t have a suit like Calvin’s to give you, but I do have a word from Jesus to leave with you: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful” (John 14:27). Thus, the apostle Paul could declared, “I can do all things in him [Christ – NKJ] that strengtheneth me” (Phil. 4:13).

LESSONS FROM THE CHURCH AT ANTIOCH

LESSONS FROM THE CHURCH AT ANTIOCH

INTRODUCTION
A. Without question, the church of Christ is the greatest institution on earth.
1. Granted, there are many manmade organizations that do much good, yet none are comparable to the body of Christ – it has no rival.
2. The church did not come by chance, nor was it the invention of man.
3. The Almighty had it in His eternal mind to prepare, plan, and plant His church over which Christ would be the head and in which are all the saved
B. The early church was abounding “in the work of the Lord” (1 Cor. 15:58)
1. Their main mission was to glorify God through three primary avenues:
a. Seeking the lost (Mk. 16:15-16)
b. Serving the suffering (Jam. 1:27)
c. Strengthening the saved (Rom. 14:19)
2. As they went about doing good and performing their assigned work – the church grew
a. Acts 1:8 outlines how this growth took place…
b. We are thankful for the birth and the growth of the Lord’s church
3. We also need to be thankful that there are, in the inspired Record, historical accounts of a number of congregations of the Lord’s church, some of which challenge the best that is in us – the church of Christ in Antioch is one example of such a congregation
DISCUSSION
A. IT’S ESTABLISHMENT
1. When Stephen was martyred, a great wave of persecution against Christians arose, which scattered Christians into the regions of Judea and Samaria
a. Acts 8:1-4
b. Acts 11:19-20
2. These persecuted Christians who had traveled 300 miles from Jerusalem to Antioch carried the Gospel with them
a. Thus began in Antioch a congregation of the church of Christ
b. The Word was preached and the Word was obeyed – we cannot improve upon this God-given formula.
B. STRENGTHS OF THE CHURCH AT ANTIOCH
1. A Taught Church
a. Acts 11:22-26
b. The church at Jerusalem could have become jealous at the good news at Antioch, but their reaction was “Let us help them!”
1) So they sent Barnabas – the great exhorter (Acts 4:36)
2) Through his efforts the church grew (Acts 11:24)
c. Though these at Antioch were Christians by virtue of Gospel obedience, there were at the same time novices, and needed to grow in faith.
d. This is exactly what Jesus taught – Great Commission
1) Matthew 28:19-20
2) 2 Peter 3:18
2. A Benevolent Church
a. Acts 11:27-30
b. The young church in Antioch demonstrated their love to the needy believers in Jerusalem by taking up a collection for them
c. The unselfish and benevolent spirit of these believers is remarkable, especially considering that the most mature of them were a only a few years old in the Lord
d. We too need to be benevolent
1) “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care”
2) 2 Corinthians 9:6-7
a) “Cheerful” come from hilaros from which we get our English tern “hilarious”
b) It should be a thrill of a lifetime to give
3. An Unprejudiced and United Church
a. Acts 13:1
b. Five people are mentioned in this verse as being prophets and teachers, all reflecting a great diversity of background
1) They were of different races
2) There was no prejudice among them – they were one
3) They knew the church was a place for every race, culture and color
4) Galatians 3:26-28
c. The Bible condemns prejudice – James 2:9
d. The unbiased unity of believers in seen in our Lord prayer – John 17:20-21
e. Philippians 2:2
4. A Busy Church
a. “…they ministered to the Lord…” (Acts 13:2)
1) How did they minister?
2) By their worship, by converting others, by edification, and by assisting the needy
3) They were busy in God’s service
b. Are we workers for the Lord?
1) Mark Twain once said, “I do not like work even when someone else is doing it”
2) There are many things that vie for our attention that put our spiritual pursuits on the backburner
3) Are we too busy to have time for the Lord? If so, we’re too busy – balance is essential
c. Ephesians 2:10
d. 1 Corinthians 15:58
5. A Receptive Church
a. Acts 13:2-3
b. The Holy Spirit gave the Antioch congregation the command to set apart Barnabas and Saul for a specific work
1) They responded obediently to the Lord’s will – “they sent them away”
2) There was no questioning – no second guessing
c. How do we respond to the Lord’s will?
1) Our attitude toward God’s word reveals our attitude toward God
2) John 12:48 – Receiving God and His word are connected
3) If we do not have time for the Scriptures we do not have time for God
d. Scripture is ‘God-breathed” and we cannot mistreat the Scripture without mistreating God
6. An Evangelistic Church
a. Acts 13:4
b. The Antioch congregation was ready to send Barnabas and Saul to do mission work under the Spirit’s directive.
1) This was a sign of maturity, as they did not cling to their friends but released them, knowing that God’s will was best.
2) They know that God would take up the slack with other teachers and prophets
c. The first missionary journey began and ended in Antioch (Acts 14:25)
1) The second missionary journey began and ended in Antioch (Acts 15:40-41; 18:22).
2) The third missionary journey also began in Antioch (Acts 18:23)
d. Are we mission minded?
C. TROUBLE IN THE CHURCH AT ANTIOCH
1. Where there are people, there are problems, and the church in Antioch was no exception
2. Acts 15:1-2
a. They had modified the plan of salvation
b. This false doctrine was opposed – the apostles and the elders settled the matter
3. Every congregation faces trouble…
a. We must never deviate from the truth
b. We must meet the trouble head on

GOD OWNS ALL

A capitalist and a socialist were arguing about the relative merits of their positions when a third person stepped forward and interrupted them and said, “I am a theist.” They immediately ridiculed him and asked, “What do you mean?” He replied, “A capitalist believes that individuals own and should own the wealth of the world. A socialist believes that all the people should own the wealth of the world and create a great commonwealth. A theist believes that God owns the world and that man is merely the custodian, the steward of its wealth. A theist believes that everything begins with God and everything belongs to God. ‘The earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof.’ I am a
Theist.”

Remember, “Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy” (1 Cor. 4:2).

THE BLESSINGS OF GOD (Eph. 1:3-14)

THE BLESSINGS OF GOD
Ephesians 1:3-14

INTRODUCTION
A. A man who had been a drunkard on Chicago’s Skid Row for many years came to a half-way house ate a meal and went to bed. That was his last night on earth. He died poverty-stricken and friendless, never to see another day. What he did not know was that he had an inheritance of over 4 million dollars waiting for him in England. The authorities has searched for him but were unable to find him because he had no address. Here was a man who has all the material wealth he could want, but he lived and died in poverty.
1. In a sense he was just like many Christians and non-Christians alike, who live in poverty because they are not fully aware of their wealth in Christ.
2. God has made available for us a wealth of blessings
3. The majority of the world and many in the church never take advantage of the blessings
B. We receive two types of blessings from the Lord: Temporal and Spiritual
1. Concerning temporal blessings:
a. Psalm 37:25
b. Psalm 34:9-10
2. But spiritual blessings are far more valuable than the temporal ones
a. These are blessings for the inner man
b. These blessings are perfect and eternal
C. Ephesians 1:3-14 sets forth many of these spiritual blessings:
1. We are a chosen people (v. 4)
2. We are adopted children (vs. 5-6)
3. Redemption and forgiveness (v. 7)
4. Wisdom (v. 8)
5. Revelation of His will (vs. 9-10)
6. An inheritance (vs. 11-12)
7. Sealed with the Holy Spirit (vs. 13-14)
DISCUSSION
A. SPIRITUAL BLESSINGS ARE FOUND ONLY IN CHRIST
1. Ephesians 1:3
a. “Every spiritual blessing” is in Christ
b. Therefore, there are no spiritual blessings outside of Christ
c. John 14:6
d. Acts 4:12
2. Thus, to receive these spiritual blessings we must be “in Christ”
a. How do we get into Christ?
b. Galatians 3:27
c. Romans 6:3-4
B. THOSE WHO ARE “IN CHRIST” ARE BLESSED:
1. In Christ we are blessed as “chosen” people (v. 4)
a. Does God choose arbitrarily? NO!!!
b. Notice Psalm 4:3
c. Those that are in Christ are chosen
d. Deuteronomy 7:6 … it is a privilege to be a chosen people
e. Those who are chosen must remain “holy and without blemish”
2. In Christ we are blessed as “adopted sons” (vs. 5-6)
a. We become adopted sons by being “foreordained” (predestined – ASV)
1) proopizo – to mark out a boundary beforehand
2) This boundary is “in the Beloved” – i.e. in Christ
3) John 1:12
b. As adopted sons we have:
1) New relationship with the Father (Gal. 4:4-5)
2) The same rights and privileges as a genuine son (Rom. 8:16-17)
3) Access to the presence of the Father (Gal. 4:6)
4) A special relationship with the children of God (Mt. 12:46-50)
3. In Christ we are blessed with “redemption” and “forgiveness of sins” (v. 7)
a. Again notice where this blessing is found – “in Christ”
a. “Redemption” – setting a man free by paying a ransom
1) We are guilty … deserve death
2) Jesus paid the ransom … 1 Timothy 2:5-6
3) 1 Peter 1:18-19
b. “Forgiveness of sins”
1) Matthew 26:28
2) It is in baptism that we contact the blood (Rom. 6:3-4)
3) If we are not in Christ we have not contacted the blood of Christ
4. In Christ we are blessed with “wisdom” (v. 8)
a. This wisdom from above is only available to those in Christ
b. But, we must keep searching in Christ:
1) 1 Corinthians 1:24, 30
2) Romans 11:33
3) Colossians 2:3
5. In Christ we are blessed with the revelation of His will (vs. 9-10)
a. God has made known to us the “mystery of his will”
1) “Mystery” comes from a Greek word meaning “not yet revealed” – notice, though it was “made known”
2) This revealed mystery is the scheme of redemption, and it was the Father’s “good pleasure” to do this
3) This great act was not an afterthought, but was in the mind of God from the very beginning.
b. The revelation of God is a true blessings to all those who are in Christ
1) We receive needed instruction
2) Details concerning salvation
3) This revealed will makes it possible for all obedient believers to “sum up all things” [gather together in one – NKJ] in Christ.
6. In Christ we are blessed with an “inheritance” [heritage – ASV] (vs. 11-12)
a. What is this inheritance that we are blessed with?
1) Acts 20:32
2) Colossians 1:12
3) It is a spiritual inheritance
b. Christians partake of this inheritance now in the kingdom but there is another part of this inheritance to come – “heaven”
c. The ASV says “in whom also we were made a heritage”
1) So according to this rendering we are God’s private possession – we are His redeeming work
2) Thus it could be said that as God’s redeeming work, as His heritage, we receive an inheritance that is incorruptible and does not fade away (1 Pt. 1:4)
3) Moses put it this way … Deuteronomy 32:9

7. In Christ we are blessed with the “seal of the Holy Spirit” (vs. 13-14)
a. A “seal” is an identifying mark to denote ownership
b. There are different views…
1) When we are baptized we are given the Holy Spirit to show that we belong to God (Acts 2:38; 2 Cor. 1:22)
a) But, remember, that the Holy Spirit does nothing to us separate and apart from the word of God
b) The Holy Spirit works on our heart by using the sword of the Spirit (Eph. 6:17)
c) God’s word is all-sufficient
2) Being “sealed with the Holy Spirit” means that when people become Christians the Spirit identifies them as belonging to or being under the authority of the One the
seal represents, which is, of course, God.
b. The Holy Spirit is the “guarantee of our inheritance”
1) A “guarantee” (earnest – ASV, KJV) is a down payment or a pledge
2) The Holy Spirit was given to us in promise of further payment – heaven; just as we might give a down payment when we buy a car or house.
3) I believe that in the first century is was the miraculous measure of the Spirit, today this guarantee is found in the word of God – the sword of the Spirit
CONCLUSION
A. Why would anybody want to ignore these great blessings?
B. If you are not a Christian you are ignoring these wonderful blessings … will you not take advantage of them today by obeying the gospel?

WHAT MEAN THESE STONES

INTRODUCTION
A. Joshua 4:19-24
1. God’s people, under the leadership of Joshua, have just entered the land promised to their forefathers
2. Notice the events of the past:
a. 400 plus years of bondage in Egypt
b. Moses had led Israel for some 40 years prior to his death in the land of Moab
c. The law of God had been given:
1) To the people of the exile from Egypt to Mt. Sinai – Exodus
2) To the people of the inheritance of Moab – Deuteronomy
d. The Jordan River was crossed via dry land
e. The children of Israel are now in the Promise Land – but what do they do first?
3. Under the Lord’s instruction, Joshua establishes a “memorial” by having each of the twelve men he had chosen to remove a stone from Jordan. These 12 stones were then placed as a memorial of their passing through the Jordan River.
B. Memorials are for the purpose of reminding us of certain events. They serve as valuable lessons to succeeding generations.
1. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
2. The Lincoln Memorial
3. The Washington Monument
4. Memorial Day
5. A spiritual memorial – The Lord’s Supper
C. Later when those who saw the stones would as, “What mean these stones?”
1. In asking, an important question will have been raised
2. In answering, some valuable lessons will be taught
D. What might have been some of the possible answers that were given?
DISCUSSION
A. What did these stones mean? – These stones meant that God is a God of Providence.
1. He cares for His people
2. He provides for His people
3. God made provisions for His people in the past:
a. Examples:
1) Joseph to prepare the grain to preserve the Hebrew nation
2) Moses rose up to be God’s deliverer
3) Manna & quail provided in the wilderness
4) A law to live by
5) Protection from their enemies
6) His presence to guide them – Cloud and Pillar of Fire
7) A new leader to succeed Moses
8) Miraculous parting of the Jordan River
b. Even though time and time again the Lord provided for them, it was important that they be reminded of God’s graciousness and God’s provision for them
4. God continues to provide for His people under the Christian dispensation
a. Romans 8:28
b. 1 Peter 2:9
c. Romans 8:35-38
5. God’s providence is abundant today!
B. What did these stones mean? – These stones meant that each succeeding generation must be taught about God.
1. Joshua 4:21-22
a. Why? Note Joshua 4:24
b. Some things should not be forgotten
c. Some things should always be remembered
2. Deuteronomy 6:1-9
a. Moses charged the people to teach their children and grandchildren
b. They must be taught God’s law
c. And that which is taught is to be taught they way God would want it taught – no addition or subtraction
3. The obligation to teach our children is enjoined on us today
a. Ephesians 6:4
b. If we do not teach our children the world will – but:
1) The world will teach them wrong things
2) The world will not teach them about eternal things
3) The world will not teach them about spiritual matters
4) The world will not teach them about the sacredness of life
5) The world will not teach them about God
4. Friends, one untaught generation could very well take the church into apostasy. Consider some things about Ephesus
a. Acts 20:29-31
b. 1 Timothy 1:3
c. Revelation 2:4
5. These stones mean that each generation must be taught
C. What did these stones mean? – These stones meant that conviction is more important than convenience.
1. The Lord desire these people to remember Him
a. To keep themselves away from the gods of the land
b. God wanted their allegiance and service out of the conviction of their hearts
c. They were entering a land that had many false gods
1) It would be easy for them to mix and mingle with these false religions
2) They could be easily led astray
3) They could easily embrace these false religions
4) In fact, the biblical records shows they continually had a problem with false gods
2. The child of God today is faced with a similar dilemma
a. False doctrine is a problem in our day
b. It is easy to worship a god of convenience instead of worshipping in truth out of conviction
3. 2 Corinthians 6:14-18
a. Paul is saying do not mix with unbelievers in any compromising relationships
b. Does this mean that we cannot be around unbelievers? No! How else would we be able to teach them?
c. It does mean that we cannot enter into any relationship with an unbeliever that would cause us to be guilty of sin
4. These stones mean that we must serve God out of conviction rather than out of convenience
D. What did these stones mean? – These stones meant that God’s people not only had a past – they also had a future
1. There was no need for a memorial if this was the end
a. Israel had a glorious past…
1) They have been delivered from bondage
2) They had been cared for time and time again (manna, quail, water, guidance, etc.)
b. Not only did they have a glorious past, they also had a future
1) Joshua 4:21
2) “In the time to come” is future
c. They needed to prepare each generation to tell the world about their God. If they didn’t who would?
2. Let us consider the Lord’s church
a. The church has a glorious past
1) Its place in Old Testament
2) Its establishment
3) It growth throughout Acts
4) It survived persecution and the Dark Ages
5) The fact that it still exists at all is a credit to the mighty providence of God
b. Colossians 1:23
1) There was a time when the Gospel was preached to the whole world
2) Those people are dead and gone, and we must be concerned about reaching the lost in our lifetime
3) Who will tell the world if we don’t?
4) Ephesians 3:10
c. We must continue the work the Lord has assigned to the church
1) We cannot rest on our laurels
a) Certainly it is fine to remember them
b) Sure we should give thanks for past efforts
c) There is nothing wrong with feeling proud
2) But, we must constantly carry and defend the banner of truth
d. Truly we have a past, but we also have a future
1) There is a new generation yet unborn that shall depend upon what we are now – today!
2) What a glorious past … What a glorious future
3. These stones meant that while we have a past, we also have a future
CONCLUSION
A. Our part in what is now past history may have varied
1. Some are too young to remember
2. Some may have been young converts and thus were not deeply involved at that time
3. But now we must put our shoulders to the harness and work for the future
B. What are these stone? They are a memorial for God’s people.
1. They meant that God is a God of Providence
2. They meant that each succeeding generation must be taught about God
3. They meant that conviction is more important than convenience
4. They meant that God’s people not only had a past, but they also had a futrue

OUR HARBOR MASTER

When a large ship enters a harbor, it takes on board what is called a harbor master. This is a man who knows that harbor; he knows the length of it, he knows the depth of it. He knows where the hazards are. He knows where the tides and currents are; what direction they flow in and how strong they are. When that harbor master comes on board, he takes control of that ship, and he gives order to the captain who steers the ship. He is an outside expert who is brought in to make sure that ship docks safely.

As we sail through the sea of life, we have a harbor master – the word of God. The Bible informs us of the currents, the tides, the hazards, and the flow of this life. If you will let the Bible guide the ship of your life, it will guide you safely through the hazards of earth, right into the harbor of heaven. Because the Bible is the only guide you need.

“Seeing that his divine power hath granted unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that called us by his own glory and virtue” (2 Pt. 1:3). “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, And light unto my path” (Psa. 119:105).

LOOK BEHIND THE CURTAIN

“Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!”

That was the thunderous directive declared by the “Wizard of Oz” to Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion. Dorothy’s tiny terrier Toto had pulled back the curtain that kept the true identity of “The Wizard” a secret. Instead of being “Oz, the Great and Powerful,” the “wizard” was revealed by the pup to be an ordinary man, a con artist, practicing the art of smoke and mirrors to impress the people with his faked naked powers.

If man is not careful he will follow the “Wizard of Oz” instead of the one true God. Many follow blindly the “great wizard” of false doctrine – being deceived through the art of smoke and mirrors.

Beloved, let’s “pull the curtain back” and be as the Bereans, who “received the word with all readiness of the mind, examining the Scriptures daily, whether these things were so” (Acts 17:11). “Give diligence [study – KJV] to present thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, handling aright the word of truth” (2 Tim. 2:15).

PREPARE FOR THE JUDGMENT

Years ago, a minister waited in line to have his car filled with gas just before a long holiday weekend. The attendant worked quickly, but there were many cars ahead of him in front of the service station. Finally, the attendant motioned him toward a vacant pump.

“Preacher” said the young man, “sorry about the delay. It seems as if everyone waits until the last minute to get ready for a long trip.”

The minister chuckled, “I know what you mean. It’s the same in my business.”

Jesus said, “Watch therefore: for ye know not when the lord of the house cometh, whether at even, or at midnight, or at cockcrowing, or in the morning” (Mk. 13:35). Friends, we need to be preparing for the Judgment today!

Think About It!
