Legend has it that a young sculptor, the son of a sculptor, worked earnestly on a statue but couldn’t seem to make it right; as he left it every night, he found that it was marred, here and there, with rough spots, ugly lines, little defects that he couldn’t seem to correct. During the night the father, a master of art, would go softly into the studio and correct it all in the space of a few hours. One morning the truth dawned on the young man, and he cried, “The Master has touched this!” He realized his father was the one making the corrections.
The same is true with us. We are rough, crude, and ugly in life – and we cannot seem to get it right. That is why we need the help of God, and that is why Paul said, “I can do all things in Christ that strengtheneth me” (Phil. 4:13). This is why we must rely on the word of God that is able to build us up and give us the inheritance (Acts 20:32).

Tune in at http://www.harrisandmoore.org or KATX 97.7 FM or KNNK 100.5 FM for this live call-in program. You have heard what men have said, now listen to what the Bible says.
When I visit the grandkids, I love to hear the words, “Watch me Poppy!” My granddaughter and grandson, whom I affectionately call “Tooter” and “Tater” wants me to watch them blow a bubble, “try” to whistle, make some funny face, or do some acrobat routine. They want my undivided attention, and I am happy to give it to them on most occasions. I always enjoy watching my grandchildren doing this and that, and I have always loved watching my children perform in sporting events, band concerts, and the like. Watching my children and grandchildren is always a joy – it brings me great happiness.
Many parents will travel far and wide trying never to miss a performance of their child. Take a moment to think about your children or grandchildren – are they not wonderful, are they not precious? What wouldn’t you do for them? We love them so much!
My friends, there is another kind of watching that is much more important – the watching for their souls. I can live with my son fumbling the football on the one-yard line, I can live with my daughter not making the basketball team, and I can live with my granddaughter and grandson’s various failures in life, but I cannot live with them being unfaithful to the Lord. I want more than anything for them to go to heaven, and I want to be there with them.
So, along with the watching of their performances, I must, more importantly, be watching closely for their souls. This is when our children and grandchildren may want to say, “Don’t watch me,” or, “Don’t you trust me?” But Solomon said, “Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying” (Pro. 19:18; KJV). No matter how much they might complain about us watching out for them, or getting in their business, this must not deter us. Let me share with you a couple things that parents and grandparents must watch out for in the raising of their precious loved ones.
This first point may be the most crucial. We must watch out for who are their friends. The Bible clearly states, “Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company ruins good morals.'” (1 Cor. 15:33; ESV). “Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm” (Pro. 13:20; ESV). It is vital that parents know who their children spend time with at school. There are bad kids in athletics, in band, in ROTC, and in many other school organizations – who will try to lead your precious child astray. Knowing them means more than just knowing their names, it means knowing the kind of kids they are. Do not take your kids word for it! This could be fatal for a couple of reasons: 1) they may be hiding something from you, and thus, lie to you (children can lie), or 2) they may simply be unaware of the dangers associated with that kind of friend – thinking they are good. Parents need to check very carefully into whom their children hang around with.
Secondly, parents and grandparents must watch out for the kind of music and games their children play, and where they go on the Internet. Evils abound in these areas, and they have easy access to them. Do not raise your children with your head in the sand on these issues. Do some research – be alert! Many times our children do not realize the trouble associated with these avenues of evil. Watch out for your children, “so that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs” (2 Cor. 2:11; ESV). We must keep close tabs in these areas constantly, and children need to know that we are constantly watching them and checking up on them. Yes, we are getting into their personal business, and should be happy to do so. That is why you are the parent and they are the child. Do not let them forget that!
Watch out for the souls of your children and grandchildren!

A tourist lately, whilst crossing a mountain height alone, over almost untrodden snow, felt a drowsiness stealing over himself, to yield to which he knew would be fatal. As the night closed in the snowflakes fell thick and fast, and the freezing blast grew apace; he tried to reason with himself, and with his utmost energy to free himself from the sleep of death fastening upon him; but all to no purpose.
Just, however, when he was about to succumb, and his weary eyelids were closing never again to open, he stumbled against a heap that lay across his path. It was no stone that his foot struck, although no stone could be colder, or apparently more lifeless. On examination it proved to be a human body, buried beneath a fresh drift of snow. The next moment the traveler had a comrade in his arms; was chaffing his hands and wrists, his chest and brow; breathing upon his cold blue lips the warm breath of a living soul; pressing the still, silent heart of his companion to the rapid pulses of his own generous bosom.
And what was the result? The effort to stoop down and assist another had removed the ominous pressure upon his brain and eyes, and imparted to him renewed life and vigor. He was himself again. And the record stands “He saved a another, and was himself saved.”
Is there not here the groundwork of a parable to illustrate the truth, that active Christian work is a necessary and ordained, not only for benefiting others, but for the sustaining and saving of our own soul and spirit? The Bible says, “Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me” (Mt. 25:34-40).

Junior bit the meter man, Junior bit the cook.
Junior’s antisocial now (according to the book).
Junior smashed the clock and lamp, Junior hacked the tree …
(Destructive trends are treated in chapters two and three).
Junior threw his milk at Mom. Junior screamed for more.
(Notes of self-assertiveness are found in chapter four)
Junior tossed his shoes and sock in the rain
(Negation, that, and normal, disregard the stain).
Junior set Dad’s shirt afire, whittled Grand[pa’s pipe.
(That’s to gain attention, see page 89)
Grandpa seized a slipper and yanked Junior cross his knee
(He’s read nothing but the Bible since 1893). [author unknown]
“Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; But the rod of correction shall drive it far from him” (Pro. 22:15). “Withhold not correction from the child; For if thou beat him with the rod, he will not die” (Pro. 23:13). “The rod and reproof give wisdom; But a child left to himself causeth shame to his mother” (Pro. 29:15).

How much is one human being worth? In terms of his financial profile, the prodigal was now worth zero. How much are you worth? I am not sure how to answer that question. If we could somehow break down the chemical composition of your body I could tell you your worth. You have within your body enough iron for a nail; enough sugar to fill a sugar bowl; enough fat for seven bars of soap (that may vary from person to person); enough lime to whitewash a chicken coop, enough phosphorous for 2,200 match heads, enough magnesium for a dose of magnesium; enough potassium to shoot a toy cannon, all mixed in with a little sulfur so that even in today’s inflated market you are valued at about $3.50. That is how much we are worth.
What gave the prodigal his value is that he belonged to someone? He had a father. If I hear that there are 5,000 runaways every day in America that will not cause me to blink an eye. But if I hear that my child is one of them, there is nothing that I will not do to see that they are found. You are more valuable than an African diamond mine and an Arabian oil field. Why? – Because you have a heavenly Father. In the parable of the lost coin, we read where a woman turns her house upside down in search for a missing coin. Will God not literally turn the world upside down in His search for one lost soul willing to come to Him in obedience?

SOW ON …
Oftentimes we grow discouraged
With children full of pranks
With mothers who are gossips,
And fathers who are cranks,
With folks who let us do the world
While they sit back at leisure
And never even voice a thought –
Unless it is displeasure.
With some who criticize us
Because we did not call,
And some who claim we think we’re good
And really aren’t at all!
With some who think we are too bold,
And some that we’re too shy,
And some we cannot please at all
No matter how we try.
But is this not our Father’s work?
‘Tis He who bids us go –
The harvesting will be for Him,
Our work is but to sow.
And he that goeth forth in tears,
Still sowing though he grieves,
Shall doubtless come again in joy
And bring forth precious sheaves. [author unknown]

There was a boy fishing and a sheriff drove by and noticed the boy had a long line of fish. So he pulled over and talked to the boy.
“Hey there boy, where d’ja catch all those fish?”
The boy responded “The lake.”
“Wow I’ve never seen anyone pull in so many fish from the lake.” He continued, “What did you use?”
“Stinging worms”
“What? I’ve never heard of those before. Do you have any left?”
“Yup!” and with that the boy pulled out a coffee can from his backpack and showed the sheriff. It was full of baby rattlesnakes. The cop then noticed how bloody and bitten the boy’s hands were. Every time the kid reached in to hook a snake, they all viciously attacked his hand. The sheriff pulled him into the car and with sirens blazing went to the hospital.
The boy never noticed the pain the snakes were causing him because he was blinded by the amount of fun he was having pulling in all those fish. Sin is like this, we can’t see it as the real evil it is and how it destroys us spiritually and physically. Lets look through the fun of sin because it is deceitful and Christ died for our sin, it’s not fun! If we could just see the way sin affects us spiritually as we see the way rattlesnakes harm our body we would have a much easier time fighting off the desires of the flesh.
Remember, “For the wages of sin is death; but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 6:23).

“Give ear to my words, O LORD; consider my groaning. Give attention to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to you do I pray. O LORD, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice [or, direct my prayers unto you] for you and watch” (Psa. 5:1-3).
It’s imperative for us to meet God in the morning if we want to have a good day. Jesus got up early in the morning to pray – leaving us a perfect example, “And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed” (Mk 1:35). Here we find the psalmist saying, “O LORD, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch” (Psa. 5:3).
Meeting with God is not an appointment on a clock but an appointment in your heart. “And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” (Mk. 12:30. Does God hear your voice in prayer in the morning? When He looks on you at the beginning of your day, does He look on you as a priest who has come to offer Him sacrifices of praise? That’s what “prepare” [direct – NKJ] means (v. 3) – “to put in order” my prayer. It is to arrange, as it were, a sacrifice on an altar before the Lord.
When you wake up in the morning, remind yourself that you are one of God’s priests. ” But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light” (1 Pet. 2:9). How did you become a priest? Through obedient faith in Jesus Christ (belief, repentance, confession, and baptism). The first thing we ought to do in the morning is the first thing the high priest used to do every morning. He laid the burnt offering on the altar. The burnt offering is a picture of total dedication to God. If you want to have a good day, start by giving yourself to the Lord as a burnt offering. Paul declared, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service” (Rom. 12:1; NKJ). A good day begins in the morning, and it begins at the altar of prayer.
Does your day begin with God? If not, decide to start each morning by dedicating yourself to Him as a living sacrifice and ask for wisdom for the day’s decisions and actions. He wants to direct your life through His word. So view each day as a gift from God and determine to be a good steward of the day’s resources. Make your time with Him a daily appointment. The morning is the finest time for communion with God. Someone once said,, “Prayer should be the key of the day and the lock of the night.”
