GOSPEL PREACHING

INTRODUCTION
A.The devil does not like faithful preachers and the truth which they proclaim
1. He would turn every preacher into a weak, mushy, compromising, apologetic traitor if he could.
2. It just seems that old Satan is finding an abundant supply of recruits to assist him in his destructive and diabolical efforts.

B. We must awaken to the fact that the devil has declared war against the preaching of the church, which opposes and exposes error.

DISCUSSION
A. WHAT IS PREACHING?
1. Consider these definitions:
a. “Preaching, in its strictest sense, is the public use of speech with intent to reveal God to man”.
b. “Preaching is the communication of truth by man to man. It has two essential elements, truth and personality. Neither can it spare and still be preaching.”
c. Note Paul’s statement, “We have this treasure (truth) in earthen vessels (personality)” (2 Cor. 4:7).
d. Thus, again, Preaching is the combination of “truth” and “personality”

2. The preacher is:
a. A man under orders – he is not his own master
b. One whose life is consistent with the message he proclaims
c. You cannot divorce the preacher from his preaching. In a sense the man is his message; the preacher is his proclamation; the speaker is his sermon.
d. “Take heed to thyself (preacher) and unto the doctrine (preaching)” (1 Tim. 4:16).
e. Jesus was what He said… Acts 1:1

3. The divine words that describe preaching
a. kerusso – “to proclaim as a herald”
1) Matthew 11:1
2) Romans 10:15
b. evaggelizo – “to tell good news, an evangelist”
1) 1 Corinthians 1:17
2) Galatians 1:8
c. kataggello – “to tell thoroughly”
1) Acts 4:2
2) Colossians 1:28
d. laleo – “to talk”
1) Acts 11:19
2) Acts 14:25

B. THE IMPORTANCE OF PREACHING
1. Preaching has been important to God through the ages
a. Noah was a preacher of righteousness (2 Peter 2:5).
b. Moses was God’s prophet.
c. The prophets were preachers.
d. Jesus came preaching.
e. The apostles were preachers
f. The world-wide commission calls for preaching (Mt. 28:18-20; Mk. 16:15,16).
g. God’s appraisal of preaching… 1 Corinthians 1:21

2. The place and priority of preaching in the New Testament
a. Preaching is God’s divinely appointed means of spreading the gospel
1) Romans 10:9-17
2) Preaching is vital!

b. Preaching is the means by which faith is produced in the hearer
1) Facts are proclaimed (1 Cor. 15:1-4).
2) Faith pre-supposes revelation (Rom. 10:17).
3) Faith necessitates an object.

c. Preaching the Word is God’s way of regenerating man.
1) The Word is living – the Preacher’s message is alive!
a) Hebrews 4:12
b) 1 Peter 1:23
2) The Word imparts and develops life
a) John 6:63
b) 1 Peter 2:1-2

d. Preaching is the means by which the believer is built up in the holy faith.
1) Colossians 1:28-29 …Note the three-fold objective of Paul’s preaching
a) To Warn – Man is lost. Sin will condemn. God’s wrath is real.
b) To Teach – Present a Savior. How to be saved. How to live.
c) To Present – To develop. To equip. To present to Christ.
2) 2 Timothy 3:15-17 ….Note the seven-fold work of the Word
a) Make Wise to Salvation
b) For Doctrine
c) For Correction
d) For Reproof
e) For Instruction in Righteousness
f) Develop Christian Maturity
g) To Thoroughly Furnish

e. Preaching is God’s means of reaching and involving the whole man.
1) Intellect, by which man acquires facts, information and knowledge.
2) Emotions, with which man reacts to knowledge – stirred, aroused.
3) Will, the volition to act favorably or unfavorably toward that which has been received.

C. RESPONSIBILITY OF THE LISTENERS
1. Acts 17:11
a. “Readiness of mind” – eagerness
b. “Whether those things were so” – whether it is in accordance with Scripture

2. Luke 8:18
a. “How ye hear” – attitude is vital
b. Open mind and open Bible
c. Psalm 119:97

3. Mark 4:24
a. “Take heed what ye hear” – search the Scriptures
b. Sound doctrine is a must

PERSISTENT PREACHING

“From the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, even unto this day, these three and twenty years, the word of Jehovah hath come unto me, and I have spoken unto you, rising up early and speaking; but ye have not hearkened” (Jer. 25:3).

Jeremiah had warned the people countless times (for 23 years), but they would not listen to him. He had remarkable tenacity to continue preaching to such a nonresponsive audience. What preacher would remain in a church even two years if no one in his congregation listened to him?

Preachers, learn the lesson well – don’t give up, don’t ever give up. Be a Jeremiah!

TRUE JOY

Men have pursued joy in every avenue imaginable. Some have successfully found it while others have not. Perhaps it would be easier to describe where joy cannot be found:

Not in Unbelief – Voltaire was an infidel of the most pronounced type. He wrote: “I wish I had never been born.”

Not in Pleasure – Lord Byron lived a life of pleasure if anyone did. He wrote: “The worm, the canker, and grief are mine alone.”

Not in Money – Jay Gould, the American millionaire, had plenty of that. When dying, he said: “I suppose I am the most miserable man on earth.”

Not in Position and Fame – Lord Beaconsfield enjoyed more than his share of both. He wrote: “Youth is a mistake; manhood a struggle; old age a regret.”

Not in Military Glory – Alexander the Great conquered the known world in his day. Having done so, he wept in his tent, before he said, “There are no more worlds to conquer.”

Where then is real joy found? – The answer is simple, in Christ and His church.

I guess this is why Paul wrote, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ” (Eph. 1:3). Solomon, sought joy in every place imaginable, but looking back he declared, “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man” (Eccl. 12:13).

TRUE WORSHIP #1

TRUE WORSHIP #1

INTRODUCTION

Worship is a topic in which we all should be vitally interested

  1. In the beginning, on the sixth day of creation, God reached down and made man from the dust of the earth
  2. Ever since then man has been reaching upward to God in worship
  3. The Greeks had a name for man anthropos, meaning the “upward looking one.” Man was made with the capacity to look upward in worship of God
  4. David captures the wonderful concept and spirit of worship throughout the book of Psalms, for example:
  5. Psalm 95:1-6
  6. Psalm 96:1-4, note especially verse 9
  7. John 4:20-24
  8. Notice that in these 5 verses the word “worship” is used 10 times (Jesus using 8 of them), and from this we can see this is an important passage in helping us to understand worship.
  9. Over the next few Sundays, we will strive to understand what TRUE WORSHIP is all about

This is vitally important to understand for:

  1. Many say, “It doesn’t matter how you worship as long as it comes from the heart.”
  2. Many go to worship “for what they can get”
  3. Worship has become nothing more than entertainment in many congregations
  4. Many hold little reverence in worship

In the very beginning we need to realize that worship is not getting – it is giving to God.

DISCUSSION

WORSHIP DEFINED

  1. We have to be careful with definitions, for the Bible deals more in descriptions & demonstrations than definitions.
  2. Our English word “worship” is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word “WORTHSHIP” thus declaring the worth of God. Notice how this idea is described in …
  3. Revelation 4:11
  4. Revelation 5:12
  5. Worship is ascribing worth to God, and notice that only God is worthy of worship

In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word most often translated as “worship” is SHACHAH which means to “bow down to do homage.”

  1. “…they bowed their heads and worship” (Exo. 4:31)
  2. the people bowed the head and worshipped” (Exo.12:27)
  3. In this principle REVERENCE is clearly seen ©

In the New Testament the key word translated as “worship” is proskunew (proskuneo) which means to “kiss the hand toward.” Carries the idea of reverence

  1. Another word latreuw (latreuo) basically means “to serve or minister”
  2. And another is leitourgos (lei/tour/gos) which means “a priestly minister,” an insight into our priestly approach to God… 1 Peter 2:5, 9

As we put all this together, we understand that worship:

  1. Ascribes worth to God
  2. Is to be done in reverence – “Our hearts are to bow down to Him.”
  3. Involves “attitudes” and “actions”
  4. Is a balanced activity involving the mind, the emotions, and the will.

In thinking about God, David wrote “My heart is overflowing” (Psa. 45:1)

WORSHIP DEPICTED

  1. Exodus 30:34-38
  2. God has always instructed His people how He wanted to be worshipped
  3. Notice that this perfume, actually a sweet smelling incense was made for GOD ALONE (v. 37). The recipe was not to be duplicated for any man – to do so would cause one to be cut off.

1) What is the point? The fragrance was for God alone. It rose to God’s nostrils – it was unique for Him

2) This is a great picture of worship! Our worship rises up to God – it is to be unique, separated, holy, and well pleasing unto HIM.

3) This is one of the great problems in the church

today – many are losing sight of God and focus on

themselves and their wants

  1. One of the primary functions of the church is to supply the incentives for worship and to provide the proper environment for worship.
  2. When worship is not the growing experience of Christians – the church could be at fault, or the individual could be at fault.

If the church is at fault, it will eventually perish – unless it remedies the situation

1) The church must provide vibrant, meaningful periods of worship.

2) The church must make sure that every individual has the opportunity to worship God properly

3) This would include the proper atmosphere, that is, a place of reverence and holiness, and would include actions done according to God’s precepts

If it is the individual’s fault, he will wither away spiritually unless a change is made.

1) You see, meaningful worship is the heart of the life and work of a Christian.

2) An individual must realize that… worship is not something that is done to him, but that which is offered toward God.

3) Many say, “I just don’t get anything out of worship.” This is because they are putting little or nothing into their worship.

CONCLUSION

It has been said “that worship is the missing jewel of the church.”

  1. That sounds very strange when you consider the fact that the church spends so much time in worship
  2. But, QUANTITY is no substitute for QUALITY
  3. And just “going to church” is not the same thing as meaningful worship

Our challenge, then, is to grow in the worship defined and described in God’s holy word

  1. We need to ask ourselves:
  2. Do I really focus on God?
  3. Is worship a real priority with me?
  4. Do I faithful attend the services with a true commitment to worship in spirit and truth?
  5. Do I do all I can to make my worship meaningful
  6. Do I interfere with other’s worship?

There is a close relationship between salvation, worship and service.

  1. Salvation comes down from God through Jesus for man
  2. Worship rises up to God from man through Jesus
  3. Service goes out to man from man for God

SOUND THEOLOGY

In the Peanuts comic strip, Linus and Lucy are standing at the window looking out at the rain falling. Lucy says to Linus, “Boy, look at it rain…What if it floods the earth?” Linus, the resident biblical scholar for the Peanuts, answers, “It will never do that…in the ninth chapter of Genesis, God promised Noah that would never happen again, and the sign of the promise is the rainbow.” With a smile on her face, Lucy replies, “Linus, you’ve taken a great load off my mind.” To which Linus responds, “Sound theology has a way of doing that.”

It is imperative that we be “sound in doctrine.” Notice what the Bible says about sound doctrine.

“If any man teacheth a different doctrine, and consenteth not to sound words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; he is puffed up, knowing nothing, but doting about questionings and disputes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, wranglings of men corrupted in mind and bereft of the truth, supposing that godliness is a way of gain” (1 Tim. 6:3-5). “For the time will come when they will not endure the sound doctrine; but, having itching ears, will heap to themselves teachers after their own lusts; and will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn aside unto fables” (2 Tim. 4:3-4). “Holding to the faithful word which is according to the teaching, that he may be able both to exhort in the sound doctrine, and to convict the gainsayers” (Tit. 1:9). “But speak thou the things which befit the sound doctrine” (Tit. 2:1).

It is very true that being sound in doctrine brings peace of mind. But being sound in doctrine is not enough, for Jesus said, “If you love me you will keep my commandments” (Jn. 14:15). “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father who is in heaven” (Mt. 7:21).

OUR NEED FOR RELATIONSHIP

“That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you also, that ye also may have fellowship with us: yea, and our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ” (1 Jn. 1:3).

A need for rich personal relationship is deeply embedded in our created nature. We owe our existence not to impersonal forces, but to a personal Creator, and it was the Creator Himself who said, “It is not good that man should be alone” (Gen. 2:18). We are personal beings, persons designed for full, vibrant relationship.

But sin destroys relationship. “Behold, Jehovah’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: but your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, so that he will not hear” (Isa. 59:1-2). It severs us from God and from others, cutting us off from this thing that is necessary to our nature. So there is perhaps no symptom of sin any more obvious than the deep, gnawing pain of isolation. And in sin, there is no groaning more desperate than to be freed from our loneliness.

But however much we need relationship in general, our most vital need, the only one we can’t survive without, is our need for relationship with God. In every man there is a loneliness, an inner chamber of peculiar life into which God only can enter. Our craving for God is a dependency we were meant to have. It is a profound need for perfect relationship, and to try to fill this need with our flawed connection to other human beings is not only wrong, it is hopeless.

If we fail to let God fill our need for relationship – if it is not in Him that our loneliness is taken away – then we will force an impossible mandate on the imperfect people around us. We will demand from others a satisfaction they aren’t capable of providing in this broken world. Only the infinite God is able to relate to us perfectly. And even with God, what we can have in this life is only a foretaste of the perfect union that heaven will provide.

When we find that even our most intimate earthly companions can’t provide the depth of relationship for which we were created, bitterness, resentment and depression may be the tempting reaction. Yet there is a healthier response. We can see the imperfections in our own relationships as a salutary reminder. God alone is the One to whom we must look for life, unfailing love, and meaningful relationship. To forget that is to lose the path that leads to heaven.

“If we say that we have fellowship with him and walk in the darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanseth us from all sin” (1 Jn. 1:6-7).
