COTTON CANDY PREACHING

COTTON CANDY PREACHING

If I were to ask you what would be worse, to give your children cotton candy or poison, what would you say? In answer to this question most people would very quickly say that poison would be the worse thing to give our children. But consider this, what if all we gave our children to eat was cotton candy? What if cotton candy was their favorite food and that was all they wanted, and any time they received anything else they would throw a fit? Would we only give them cotton candy? Would we be loving and concerned parents if we only fed our children this cottony pile of sugar? Most assuredly not! We understand that our children could not survive only on sugar, for they would soon grow weak and sick, and would soon die. So, what is worse for us to give our children, only cotton candy or poison? The truth is that both will eventually kill our children.

Now let us make a spiritual application. Is it worse to teach in the Lord’s church false doctrine or to teach simple pleasant truths from God’s word? In answer to this question most people would quickly say that false doctrine would be the worst thing of all to teach. But consider this, what if we only taught concerning the loving story of Ruth, or about benevolence, or about the need for loving families, or about the need to feel good about ourselves? Now these are topics that we should be concerned about and are issues of interest, and should be taught. But, can a Christian survive spiritually solely on this kind of diet? Can a child of God mature and be grounded in the faith solely on these kinds of meals? The answer is no!

There are many preachers and teachers in the Lord’s church who are not teaching error, but neither are they being distinct in their preaching and teaching. Many are given more to proclaim what the brethren want to hear than what they need to hear. Concerning the people of Isaiah’s day, the Lord declared, “For it is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of Jehovah; that say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits” (Isa. 30:9-10). Many today are clamoring for the same things as the Israel of old – smooth things, and sweet and pleasant words. And what is even more disturbing are the preachers and teachers who are giving into their cry with sermons and lessons filled with nothing but “lovey-dovey mush.”

Many preach to please men and tickle their ears with what they like to hear. Paul said, “For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ” (Gal. 1:10). Paul warned Timothy about people who have “itching ears” and warned that such people will gather around those who will scratch their ears by teaching lies (2 Tim. 4:3-4). The whole counsel of God must be preached, regardless of how it is received (Acts 20:26-27)! The truth is truth and must be preached! I didn’t write the book (Bible) and have no right to “water it down” to please men.

The apostle Paul declared, “I shrank not from declaring unto you anything that was profitable, and teaching you publicly, and from house to house…Wherefore I testify unto you this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men. For I shrank not from declaring unto you the whole counsel of God” (Acts 20:20, 26-27). If we really care for our families and brethren the actions of Paul will be true of us! Furthermore, Paul also said, “Preach the word; be urgent in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching” (2 Tim. 4:2). You will notice that good gospel preaching demands positive and negative proclamation of truth. But as already mentioned, some “will not endure the sound doctrine; but, having itching ears, will heap to themselves teachers after their own lusts; and will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn aside unto fables” (2 Tim. 4:3-4). But we must not allow this attitude to influence us away from preaching the whole counsel of God.

We have too many “cotton candy preachers and teachers” in the brotherhood who are “sugar coating” the brethren into spiritual decay! Tell me, which are worse, false teachers or cotton candy preachers? The truth is they both will cause the spiritual demise of their listeners. Beloved, our preaching and teaching must be true to the Book, straight forward without apologies, address the spiritual needs of the people, encourage the faint hearted, rebuke sin, and loving set forth the whole counsel of God.

Will you help me in this effort? Will you be as Jeremiah who said that the word of God “was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay [or, I could not hold it back]” (Jer. 20:9). May we all feed the brethren a well balanced diet from the word of God!

THOUGHTS CONCERNING THE PREACHER

THOUGHTS CONCERNING THE PREACHER

There is usually a lot of confusion in most congregations of the Lord’s church concerning the work of the preacher. Many have their own ideas, some have no real idea, and others have the wrong idea about the preacher’s job. To help the church and the preacher have a better working relationship, consider the following thoughts.

WHAT ONE SHOULD NOT EXPECT OF THE PREACHER

1. To do my work for me
2. To be perfect
3. To please everyone
4. To support any faction that may arise
5. To listen to any gossip that may emerge
6. To be “my” preacher alone
7. To never be down in the dumps.

WHAT ONE MAY EXPECT OF THE PREACHER

1. To preach the word (1 Tim. 4:2). This is his first and foremost responsibility.
2. To study many hours each day (2 Tim. 2:15) – he must be allowed and provided this time.
3. To be a good example and keep his life pure (1 Tim. 4:12) – he lives in a fish bowl and everything he does leaves the church’s imprint.
4. His counsel when there is a problem. He will use the word of God in this regard (2 Pt. 1:3).
5. His assistance in converting your friends and neighbors (Mt. 28:19-20).
6. His prayers and concern when he is informed of your illness (Jam. 5:16).
7. To have courage to reprove and rebuke sin (2 Tim. 2:4).

WHAT THE PREACHER SHOULD EXPECT FROM THE CONGREGATION

1. Their faithful attendance and attention in every worship service.
2. Their prayers on his behalf as he does the work of the Lord.
3. To never forget, that while he is God’s spokesman, he is still human and will make mistakes.
4. To refrain from unjust criticism that may hinder his work and influence.
5. Their encouragement to him and his family
6. Their willingness to back him when truth is proclaimed.
7. Your unselfishness in sharing him with others in the congregation, brotherhood and community when they need his contribution

LOVE AND SACRIFICE

Ask any parent who gets up at 2:00 a.m. and then at 3:00 a.m. and then at 3:30 a.m. to answer the cry of a sick baby. Lovers never ask, “What’s the least I can do?”

Ask any man whose income is so limited that after he pays his rent and buys his groceries he has only pennies to spare. But his sweetheart has a birthday the next month and he has his eye on something that means he’ll have to go without lunch for three weeks. So he buys it.

Boys’ Town near Omaha has made capital of a poster showing a little guy toting a tyke nearly as big as he is, saying, “He’s not heavy; he’s my brother.”

Are any of these lovers looking for a medal? No. They’re only doing their duty. And it’s only natural.

Spiritually speaking, if we are scriptural and faithful in our love we will not see how little we can get by with doing in the aid of others. John said, “Hereby know we love, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoso hath the world’s goods, and beholdeth his brother in need, and shutteth up his compassion from him, how doth the love of God abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word, neither with the tongue; but in deed and truth” (1 Jn. 3:16-18).

True love is manifested sacrificially though action. Today, how will you manifest your love to your family, your brethren, and your neighbor? Remember, “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; even as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (Jn. 13:34-35).

Think About It!

Have A Great Day!

TAKE TIME TO BE HOLY

TAKE TIME TO BE HOLY

2. Even as our Father who calls us is holy – 1 Peter 1:15-16
3. Indeed, holiness is to be pursued, for without it one will not see the Lord – Hebrews 12:14
D. In this lesson, we will let the words of this song serve as the basis for our study. Note first that the song assumes…
DISCUSSION
A. THE NEED TO TAKE TIME
1. The world rushes on…
a. As expressed in the beginning of the second verse
b. Our lives are certainly hectic and fast-paced
c. Filled with activities that consume our time
d. And our lives are but a vapor – James 4:13-14

1. Spend time with the Lord…
a. The song encourages us to:
1) “Abide in Him always”

1) Prayer, as suggested by the song
a) “Speak oft with thy Lord”
b) “Forgetting in nothing His blessings to seek”
2) The Word of God (“Feed on His Word”)

b. Hebrews 7:25
2) Through the Word, which testifies of our gracious Lord?
a) John 5:39
b) 1 Peter 2:2-3
d. We cannot overestimate the importance of finding time to be with the Lord alone through prayer and the Word!
2. Spend time with others…
a. This includes fellowship with other Christians (“Make friends of God’s children”)
1) Which the early Christians continued in steadfastly – Acts 2:42
2) Which helps to ensure faithfulness and steadfastness – Hebrews 3:12-14
3) Which includes the idea of frequent assembling – Hebrews 10:24-25
b. This includes service to our fellowman (“Help those who are weak”)

2) Indeed, we will reign with Christ and God forever!
a) Revelation 22:5
b) 2 Timothy 2:12
3. Is this not even more motivation to “take time to be holy”?
CONCLUSION
A. Remember the need to take time…
1. The world rushes on, and would carry us along with it
2. Our time in this life is short, we must have our priorities straight
B. Are you taking time, indeed, making time…?
1. To spend time alone with God, in prayer and the Word?
2. To spend time with others, in fellowship and service?
C. We must take time, if we desire to…
1. Experience the blessed life Jesus offers
2. Become more Christ-like in our conduct
D. May this song (“Take Time To Be Holy”) always remind us of the need to slow down, and to do those things so crucial to our spiritual growth and happiness!
E. Have you taken the time to respond to the gospel of Christ?
1. Mark 16:15-16
2. Acts 2:38

A THREE-FOLD PORTRAIT OF A CHRISTIAN

A THREEFOLD PORTRAIT OF A CHRISTIAN
Ephesians 2:19-22

INTRODUCTION
A. One of the beautiful things concerning the Bible is its way of describing to us in different fashions what it means to be a Christian
1. Some do not act like a Christian ought to because they do not really know what it means to be a Christian.
2. Being a Christian is much much more that simply having Christian as a label
3. Being a Christian is a way of life!
4. When the Bible describes what it means to be a Christian, we had better stand up and take note.
B. In Ephesians 2:19-22, Paul sets forth a three-fold portrait of a Christian. Paul says a Christian is:
1. A citizen in the kingdom of God
2. A member of the family of God
3. A temple in which God dwells
DISCUSSION
A. CHRISTIANS ARE CITIZENS IN THE KINGDOM OF GOD
1. Ephesians 1:19a
2. Paul first pictures the Ephesians’ new status – a nation that had become a holy nation of God
a. In the Old Testament the Jews were the holy nation
b. The Gentiles, though, were not
c. Notice how Paul had earlier described them… Ephesians 2:12
3. But before Paul paints this positive picture, he presents a negative one – he presents the Gentiles as “strangers and sojourners”
a. “Strangers” were those who found themselves among people who were not their own
1) They were strangers – they did not belong
2) They were always looked on with suspicion and dislike
b. “Sojourners” (“foreigners” – KJV) were one step farther than strangers.
1) They were resident aliens, they had come to live in a place, but had never become a naturalized citizen
2) He might live and work there, but was still an outsider
c. This was not true of the present state of the Gentiles
1) They were “fellow-citizens”
2) They were not members of God’s kingdom on a passport, but on a birth certificate – by the new birth
3) They were saints as much as any other saint (Gal. 3:28)
4) They were, as 1 Peter 2:9-10 puts it…
4. What are the implications of being “fellow-citizens” in the holy nation of God?
a. They had become a people set apart from others
1) 2 Corinthians 6:17
2) James 4:4
3) There must be a clear distinction between us and the world
b. Submits to the authority of their King
1) Jesus is “King of kings” (1 Tim. 6:15)
2) We must recognize His rightful rule – we must obey – we must honor
c. There are benefits to be enjoyed
1) Ephesians 1:3
2) In the Lord’s kingdom our need of provisions are fully met, we enjoy protection, and avail ourselves of all its resources.
d. Fellowship with faithful brethren
1) Fellowship with those who can lift us up, strengthen us, and share our mutual joys and sorrows
2) We are fellow saints with all the faithful who have gone on before
e. There is the future glory of this kingdom
1) We know that one day … Philippians 2:10-11
2) We are citizens of a kingdom that cannot be shaken
3) 1 Corinthians 15:24
B. CHRISTIANS ARE MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY OF GOD
1. “But ye are … of the household of God” (Eph. 2:19b)
2. As a Christian we are a part of God’s family
3. Notice the privileges we enjoy as members of God’s family:
a. Special care … 1 Peter 5:7
b. Abundant provisions … “I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread” (Psa. 37:25)
c. Special love … John 3:16
d. Discipline … Hebrews 12:4-11
e. Training … Titus 2:11-12
4. With these special privileges comes great responsibilities
a. Matthew 5:16
1) A child reveals a great deal about his parents
2) By his actions and speech he reflects the kind of parents he has
b. Jesus is the perfect example for us – concerning Jesus, the Father said… Matthew 17:5
5. When a decision must be made concerning moral and ethical issues, we must ask:
a. If is worthy of my Father’s son?
b. Is it consistent with the family to which I belong?
c. Would my elder brother do it?
C. AS CHRISTIANS WE ARE A TEMPLE IN WHICH GOD DWELLS
1. Ephesians 2:20-22
2. Paul says this building of God is a structure developed by an active process, according to certain plans and specifications
a. Christians are living stones “built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets”
1) The “apostles and prophets” laid the foundation through their teaching concerning the church
2) They taught a doctrine to be believed and obeyed
3) Matthew 16:18
4) Ephesians 4:11-12
b. Jesus is the “chief corner stone”
1) The corner stone is the most important part of the foundation
2) The corner stone governs all parts of the foundation
3) There is not to be a single line in God’s building that is not governed by His Son.
c. The whole building is “fitly framed together”
1) God’s building does not have walls that are not attached to each other, otherwise they would fall
2) Every part of the building is important to its overall strength
d. This building, fitly framed together, grows “into a holy temple in the Lord”
1) The church as a whole is the temple of God (1 Cor. 3:16)
2) Christians as individuals are the temple of God (1 Cor. 6:19)
3) The temple of God is not a holy building, but a holy people
CONCLUSION
A. Paul paints a beautiful portrait of what it is to be a Christian
B. Christians are:
1. Citizens in God’s kingdom
2. Members of God’s family
3. The temple in which God dwells
C. Are we living up to this privilege?

WHO HAVE WE BEEN TRAMPLING?

There is an ancient story about a botanist who was studying the heather bell found in the highlands of Scotland. While looking through his microscope at this beautiful flower, he was approached by a shepherd who asked what he was doing. Rather than trying to explain, the botanist invited the shepherd to peer through his microscope and observe for himself. When the shepherd saw the wonder of the flower, he exclaimed, “My goodness, and I have been tramping on them all my life!”

Is that the word of warning we need? Wake up. Pay attention. Look around you. You may be tramping on the heart of someone nearby. Who is the Lazarus at your gate? Clearly, we need to be aware of the physical and spiritual needs of others. Remember, “So then, as we have opportunity, let us work that which is good toward all men, and especially toward them that are of the household of the faith” (Gal. 6:10).

TIME FOR FAMILY

We are all about family. The truth is, the problem is, we are all about OTHER people’s families.

The most popular show on television today? “Duck Dynasty.” After that there are the programs about “The Kardashians,” “Housewives,” of various zip codes, and “Hoarders.” We like to spy-glass at the inner-workings of family relationships that we can keep at arm’s length – or record for a later, more convenient time.

Our own family relationships cannot be put on hold. Whether it is a teething infant, a tantrum-tossing toddler, a hormone-hosed teenager, a suffering spouse, or an aging parent – we have to deal with our family in “real time” not unreal reality TV time. Those with whom we have a true connection don’t just get our attention when it is convenient. That is what makes us a “family.”

The account of the Rich man and Lazarus is almost too familiar for our ears to hear the real challenge that it offers. It is easy to read about a rich, self-absorbed, politically important man who is so involved in his own life, so busy orchestrating his own pleasures and perks, that he completely ignores the plight of Lazarus, a man who falls inside his gate, but far outside his pay-grade.

Friends, if we are not careful we can carry the rich man’s attitude into our family. Too many are more concerned with our own wants, our own pleasures, and our own personal time and neglect the need of their family – especially spiritually speaking. The Bible is clear, “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but nurture them in the chastening and admonition of the Lord” (Eph. 6:4). “Even so ought husbands also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his own wife loveth himself” (Eph. 5:28). “Wives, be in subjection unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord” (Eph. 5:22). “Honor thy father and mother” (Mat. 19:19).

Beloved, we cannot put our families on hold to deal with at a more convenient time – now is the time for family. Don’t neglect your family. Remember, Noah was a successful man of God because of the saving of his household (1 Pet. 3:20).

Think About It!

Have A Great Day!
