WHY I AM A MEMBER OF THE CHURCH OF CHRIST – 9

WHY I AM A MEMBER OF THE CHURCH OF CHRIST #9

INTRODUCTION
A. As has been pointed out in previous lessons, I am a member of the church of Christ because:
1. It was founded by the scriptural builder – Christ
2. It was founded on THE scriptural foundation
3. It was founded at the scriptural place – Jerusalem
4. Christ is the founder of only one church – His church
5. It is scriptural in name.
6. It is scriptural in organization.
7. It has no creed but the Bible
8. It gives the scriptural answer to the question: “What must I do to be saved?”
9. It teaches that man is saved by faith but not by faith only.
10. It has scriptural music in worship
B. Matthew 15:8-9
1. Here we notice that there are two kinds of worship:
a. True worship … acceptable and pleasing to God
b. False worship … that which is vain and worthless
2. True worship can be is found when we abide by the principles taught in John 4:24
a. According to truth
b. With the proper attitude
3. I recently heard a denominational preacher on the radio say that we may worship God according to the dictates of our own heart.
a. How foreign from John 4:24 can a person get?
b. Colossians 3:17
C. The question, Why do churches of Christ not use instrumental music in worship, is a very important one for one very important reason:
1. We must only do in worship what God has authorized, to do otherwise is to sin.
2. Thus, we must be able to prove to ourselves and our friends and neighbors that instrumental music in worship is not authorized.
3. We must be able to fulfill the requirements of 1 Peter 3:15
DISCUSSION
A. From Matthew 1 to Revelation 22 there is not one mention of instrumental music in Christian worship.
1. Music in worship is mentioned 10 times in the New Testament and in each instance only singing is discussed.
2. This being the case, we need to seriously consider
a. Deuteronomy 4:2
b. Proverbs 30:6
c. Revelation 22:18-19
d. One can not use instrumental music in worship without adding to God’s word.
3. God looks very severely on those who would substitute for His way
a. Uzzah … 2 Samuel 6:6-7
b. Nadab and Abihu … Leviticus 10:1-2
B. The Law of Exclusion proves instrumental music in worship is unauthorized, and thus sinful.
1. One of the major arguments that is used in favor of instrumental music is, “The Bible does not say not to…”
a. The Bible doesn’t specifically say that it is wrong to use cocaine, does that make it all right?
b. The Bible didn’t specifically say that it was wrong to beat our wives, does that make it all right?
2. The law of exclusion is a law that we use in every facet of our lives and is something that we understand
a. Woman’s rest room … didn’t say not men’s
b. Ordering at a restaurant … didn’t say not to
c. Sending the kids to the store … didn’t say not to
3. Biblical examples of the Law of Exclusion:
a. The building of the Ark (Gen. 6)
b. The Lord’s Supper (Mt. 26:26-29)
4. Thus, when God said sing that automatically eliminated:
a. Mechanical instruments
b. Humming
c. Making instrumental sounds with our mouth
C. If instrumental music in worship is scriptural why wasn’t in used in the first century?
1. Instrumental music in worship was first introduced by Pope Vitalian in 670 A.D. but was rejected.
a. In 757 A.D. an organ was finally brought in to stay by Constantine Copronymus
b. Thus instrumental music in worship was not even used until over 700 years after the establishing of the church
2. Notice what some of the various religious leaders of the past say about instrumental music:
a. John Calvin, one of the founder of the Presbyterian
Church says, “Musical instruments in celebrating the
praises of God would be no more suitable than the
burning of incense, the lighting up of lamps, the
restoration of the other shadows of the law. The
Papists, therefore, have foolishly borrowed this, as
well as many other things, from Jews.”
b. John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist Church,
said, “I have no objection to instruments of music, in
our chapels, provided they are neither heard nor
seen.”
c. Martin Luther, of the Lutheran Church, “called the
organ an ensign of Baal.”
d. Adam Clark, a famous Methodist commentator,
says, “Music as a science, I esteem and admire: but
instruments of music in the house of God I abominate
and abhor.”
3. Instrumental music in worship was not authorized in the first century and neither is it today.
D. When many are asked why they use instrumental music in worship, they say, “I just like it better that way.”
1. Since when are our likes and dislikes to be our authority in religion?
a. I like coffee and banana pudding better than unleavened bread and fruit of the vine, but that does’t give me the authority to change the Lord’s Supper!
b. What I like has no weight of authority in religion!
2. Isaiah 55:8-9
a. God’s ways are higher than our ways, thus whose way should we abide by?
b. The way of the creator or the way of the created?
3. Jeremiah 10:23
a. We can not direct our own steps
b. We have no right to direct our own steps
4. Proverbs 14:12
5. We must do as God likes and not as we like.
E. Some might say, “David used instrumental music in worship under the old law, then why can’t we?”
1. David offered burnt sacrifice unto the Lord in worship, does that mean we are authorized to offer burnt sacrifice today?
a. What about the burning of incense?
b. What about worshiping on Saturday instead of Sunday, David did.
2. What David did and did not do is not the point.
a. Today we are under the new law, the New Testament, and we must find our authority in the New Testament.
b. The old law had been taken out of the way (Col. 2:14)
CONCLUSION
A. Instrumental music in worship is not authorized and thus sinful if practiced.
B. Thus the words of Jeremiah come to mind … Jeremiah 6:16
C. Colossians 3:17

WHY I AM A MEMBER OF THE CHURCH OF CHRIST – 8

WHY I AM A MEMBER OF THE CHURCH OF CHRIST #8

INTRODUCTION
A. Why are you a member of the church of Christ?
1. If you are not a member of the church of Christ, why are you a member of the religious organization that you are?
2. Is it because that was the one your Dad and Mom were members of?
3. Is it because that is the one closest to your home?
4. Is it because it has the nicest building in town?
B. If our neighbor were to ask us why we were a member of the church of Christ, could we give them a sound reason?
1. Isaiah 41:21
2. 1 Peter 3:15
3. If your neighbor were to say that one church is as good as another, how would you answer them?
C. I am a member of the church of Christ is because:
DISCUSSION
A. WHAT IS FAITH?
1. Faith is believing something as a result of testimony or evidence.
a. The Bible is a book of testimony, given to create faith in the human heart … John 20:30-31.
b. Hebrews 11:1
2. Faith is yielding to God’s will
a. Romans 10:16
b. There were those who had not obeyed – thus, they had no faith in the report of the inspired men of God
3. Faith originates in the heart or mind … Romans 10:9-10
4. In what should we have faith?
a. God Almighty … Hebrews 11:6
b. We must have faith in Jesus Christ … John 8:24
c. We must have faith in the word of God…
1) Mark 1:15
2) Mark 16:15-16 … Believes or has faith in the gospel
5. And we must have faith in the promises of God…. Hebrews 11:13
B. HOW IS FAITH ACQUIRED?
1. Many deceived people contend that faith comes as a result of a miraculous operation upon the heart.
a. If this were true would not all men believe?
b. For, “God is not a respecter of persons” (Acts 10:34).
2. The Bible clearly teaches that it is the word of God that produces faith!
a. John 20:31
b. John 17:20
c. Acts 15:7
d. Acts 18:8
c. Romans 10:17
C. THE NECESSITY OF FAITH
1. The absolute necessity of faith is emphasized from the beginning to the end of the Bible.
2. Notice these reasons why faith is indispensable to man’s salvation:
a. Man’s heart is cleansed by faith … Acts 15:9
b. Man is justified by faith … Romans 5:1
c. Faith is necessary for salvation
1) Acts 16:31
2) Mark 16:16
d. We walk by faith and not by sight (2 Cor. 5:7)
e. The Christian life is to be lived by faith … Galatians 2:20
f. We can’t please God without faith (Heb. 11:6)
g. And, Paul says, “Whatsoever is not of faith is sin” (Rom. 14:23).
h. Without faith we will die in our sins (Jn. 8:24)
i. Faith overcomes the world … 1 John 5:4
j. And, faith is necessary for eternal life … John 3:16
3. Thus, we can see that every act of obedience and service to God is based upon faith.
D. THE DOCTRINE OF FAITH ONLY CONTRADICTS THE BIBLE
1. We have just stressed the importance of faith in God’s plan of salvation.
a. Unfortunately, men have added the word “only” to these passages.
b. This error is widespread, and is taught by the majority of the religious world.
2. Consider these reasons why the doctrine of faith only is false…
a. James 2:17
b. James 2:19
c. The only time faith only is mention is in… James 2:24
d. John 12:42-43 … they believed but would not confess the Christ
E. WE ARE SAVED BY FAITH WHEN FAITH OBEYS
1. Hebrews 11:4
2. Hebrews 11:7
3. Hebrews 11:8
4. Hebrews 11:9
5. Hebrews 11:17
6. Hebrews 11:20
7. Hebrews 11:21
8. Hebrews 11:28
9. Hebrews 11:30
10. Faith is a work man must do… John 6:28-29
CONCLUSION
A. What kind of faith do you have?
1. A devil’s faith?
2. Or, a saving obedient faith?

SHAKE IT OFF

One of the greatest deterrents to our spiritual growth and progress is our inability to shake off the things done to us by others. We can’t get on with our lives because we are still angry and hurt by another’s sin against us. We must find ways of redirecting our antagonism into something higher. We must channel our hurt, our anger, our despair, and our disappointment into something positive. Let go. Unpack the baggage. Stop wallowing in the quicksand of the past. Get your passport stamped and move on to higher ground, to your next destination.

Jesus exhorts His disciples in Matthew 10 to persevere in the midst of rejection and harm. If the people do not receive you, don’t get stuck. Don’t waste your life away crying and complaining; shake the dust from your feet and keep on moving. Don’t get put in spiritual, emotional, and psychological jail by the things other people do to you. After it’s done, don’t give them the keys to your jail cell by living in solitary confinements of unhappiness and pain. Free yourself from the jail of self-pity, and work toward your eternal reward.

Think About It!

Have A Great Day!

WORSHIP

“But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth” (Jn. 4:23-24).

We are living in a disturbing day when a host of souls, instead of having God as the “audience” in worship, have decided to make man the audience. Instead of going to worship to be scripturally edified and to give glory and praise to the Almighty, they come to be entertained, to be spectators, and to see performances. Is this kind of worship man-centered or God-centered?

To help us better understand what worship is, let us look at the English word “worship,” and then notice some of the Hebrew and Greek words used with reference to worship.

The English word “worship” comes to us from worschip (Middle English) and from weorthscipe (Anglo-Saxon). The root meaning of the word is worthy or honorable, plus the suffix ship which refers to a state or quality. Thus, the word “worship” originally referred to a state of honor, dignity or worth. Later it came to be used as a title of honor, applied especially to British magistrates as “your worship.” Americans, in our present day, mean the same thing when they say “your honor.” The word worship, it is important to note, is applied to God in the absolute sense. Realize, though, that the real help in understanding what worship is will come to us as we understand the Hebrew and Greek definitions.

In the Old Testament, the primary term used in describing “worship” is hishahawah, which is from the root word shahah. It occurs 172 times in the Old Testament and in the King James Version it is translates 99 times as “worship,” 31 times as “bow,” 18 times as “bow down,” 9 times as “obeisance,” 5 times as “reverence,” 3 times as “fall down,” and in a very few various other terms. Notice how inspiration uses this Hebrew word hishahawah, “And it came to pass, that, when Abraham’s servant heard their words, he worshipped the Lord, bowing himself to the earth” (Gen. 24:52). “And when all the children of Israel saw how the fire came down, and the glory of the Lord upon the house, they bowed themselves with their faces to the ground upon the pavement, and worshipped, and praised the Lord, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever” (2 Chr. 7:3). “And when they had made an end of offering, the king and all that were present with him bowed themselves, and worshipped” (2 Chr. 29:29). The idea, then, in hishahawah is to bow down, to prostrate one’s person in homage to a superior.

The corresponding Greek word is proskuneo (proskuneo). Proskeneo, except for two instances, is used in the Septuagint to translate hishahawah. Proskeneo occurs 60 times in the New Testament, and is always translated as “worship.” Strongs Greek Concordance defines proskuneo as “to kiss the hand to (towards) one, in token of reverence; among the Orientals, especially the Persians, to fall upon the knees and touch the ground with the forehead as an expression of profound reverence; in the New Testament by kneeling or prostration to do homage (to one) or make obeisance, whether in order to express respect or to make supplication.”

Another Greek word that would be of interest in understanding the meaning of worship is sebomai (sebomai) which occurs ten times, and is translated six of those times as “worship,” three times as “devout,” and once as “religious.” The meaning of sebomai is to hold in reverence, to fear, or to be in awe. It seems that while proskuneo emphasizes the outward show of reverence, sebomai emphasizes the inward feeling of reverence and awe. But let it be stressed that for one to truly be in awe of God, to reverently fear Him, there must be more than just inner feelings, we must worship Him in specified acts that the Almighty has authorized as is clearly pointed out in Matthew 15:9 where sebomai is used, “But in vain they do worship [sebomai] me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.”

As one reflects on the various Hebrew and Greek words used to describe worship, one thing is very apparent – pleasing worship to God is composed of certain specified, definite, prescribed activities in which the people of God draw near to Jehovah. Thus, our worship must be directed to God – God is our audience, and our worship involves the proper heart and the proper action if it is to be pleasing in the sight of God. Worship is a very vital, central, and essential part of man’s relationship God. Thus, we must realize that “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth” (Jn. 4:24).

WHY I AM A MEMBER OF THE CHURCH OF CHRIST #7

WHY I AM A MEMBER OF THE CHURCH OF CHRIST #7

INTRODUCTION
A. Today I want to share with you what I believe to be the most important reason why I am a member of the church of Christ.
B. I am a member of the church of Christ because it gives scriptural answers to the question – “What must I do to be saved?”
C. Let us begin by analyzing this question
1. The word “what” suggests that there is something required of a man in being saved. He who asks this question understands this fact.
2. The word “must” indicates that it is not a question of what should I, or what may I, but what MUST I do?
a. It is not a matter of option
b. The word “mus”” teaches the absolute necessity of the requirement.
3. The word “I” indicates that it is not what God, Christ,or the Holy Spirit must do, but what must I do.
a. All, who have any knowledge at all about the Bible know that the Godhead plays a part in man’s salvation.
b. But we must understand that there is God’s part and our part to salvation.
c. What must I do…
4. The word “do” does not mean what I must get, think, feel or believe, but it suggests activity on our part!
a. Salvation is not a matter of passiveness, but of activity!
b. If you take the word “do” out of Christianity – you will destroy it.
c. You never read of inspiration telling a sinner that there is nothing for him to do to be saved.
5. The phrase “to be saved” denotes the purpose of complying with the conditions.
a. “To be saved” is the object sought by the inquirer.
b. The phrase also suggests that the saving is done by another
c. But what must a man do to be saved by the Heavenly Father?
DISCUSSION
A. LET US CONSIDER A SURE WAY TO ANSWER THIS QUESTION
1. There could be no plainer and surer way to answer the question than to turn to the Bible and read the question and the answer given.
a. If the question is found 100 times, then we must read each question and each answer given.
b. Doing this will present the whole truth on the matter.
c. The question, “What must I do to be saved” is found only four times in the New Testament, and one of these is under the law of Moses.
2. The question was first asked by the rich young ruler who came to Jesus… Mark 10:17
a. Jesus referred him to the Ten Commandments.
1) The Mosaic Law was in force at this time, for Christ had not yet died, and nailed it to the cross (Col. 2:14).
2) It was a Jew’s duty to keep it.
b. The young man replied… Mark 10:20
c. Then Jesus said… Mark 10:21
1) The Law of Moses was not yet taken out of the way, and he was to keep it.
2) But he had a stumbling block, it was his materialism… Mark 10:22
3) He only intended to obey if it pleased him.
4) Tragically, many are like that today.
d. This answer, though, would not be given today for we are under the new law.
3. The question, “What must I do to be saved,” was also asked of the Jews on the first Pentecost after the resurrection of Jesus.
a. In Acts 2 we read of the Holy Spirit coming upon the apostles, the object of which was to guide them and direct them in the preaching of the gospel.
b. Jews from every nation were there and they all heard Peter’s sermon in their own language (Acts 2:6).
c. Peter concludes his sermon by saying… Acts 2:36
d. Notice these Jews’ response… Acts 2:37
e. Peter then answers them and says… Acts 2:38
1) Why were they not told to believe?
2) Because they already believed! So much so that they wanted to be saved.
3) According to Peter baptism is just as essential as repentance for the remission of sin – for salvation
f. Salvation requires more than faith and a change of heart, notice Acts 2:41
4. Saul of Tarsus asked, “What must I do to be saved?” in Acts 9.
a. Saul is first mentioned in connection with the stoning of Stephen (Acts 7:58; 8:1), and is mentioned as a severe persecutor of the church (Acts 8:3).
b. In all this, Saul thought he was doing right… Acts 23:1 and Acts 26:9 … our conscience is not a safe guide in religion
c. Back in Acts 9:3-5 you will notice…
1) This amazing event did not save Saul as some falsely assume
2) Acts 9:6
3) Obviously there was something yet for Saul to do to be saved
d. What Saul lack?
1) It was not belief; he had believed.
2) It was not repentance, for he was so penitent that he spent three days praying and with nourishment.
3) What did Saul lack? Paul tells us in Acts 22:16 as he recounts his conversion.
e. If Paul was saved on the road to Damascus, why was he so miserable? The truth is, he was not saved until after he was baptized.
5. Consider also the account of the Philippian jailor
a. Paul and Silas were prisoners in the Philippian jail… Acts 16:25-30
b. The jailor was an unbeliever, and there is no evidence that he ever heard a gospel sermon
c. In answer to his question, Paul says… Acts 16:31
d. But the story does not end here… Acts 16:32
1) Why? So he could believe
2) Romans 10:17
e. The result of the teaching is seen in Acts 16:33
B. WHY HAVE WE SEEN THREE DIFFERENT ANSWERS GIVEN TO THE SAME QUESTION?
The explanation is not hard:
1. The jailor was an unbeliever.
a. He was told to believe.
b. They preached to him for the purpose of producing faith.
c. He then repented and was baptized
2. The people on Pentecost did believe. So they were told to repent and be baptized for the remission of sins
3. Saul was a believing, penitent man. So he was told to be baptized and wash away his sins.
4. They were given different answers, because they were at different places on the road to salvation.
a. But all did the same things and traveled over the same road
b. For example, a man may ask how far it is to Waco, and someone tell him 67 miles.
1) He might travel a few miles and ask the question again and get a different answer
2) He may travel several more miles and ask the same question and get a different answer than the two before
3) The answer given depended where on his journey to Waco he was
c. The same is true for one on his road to salvation
CONCLUSION
A. What must we do to be saved?
B. The answer: H-B-R-C-B … remain faithful

CHECK POINT AHEAD

In Parma, Ohio a man by the name of Doug ‘Deo’ Odolecki stood on a street corner with a sign warning drivers about an upcoming drunken-driving checkpoint, but two words on the sign cost him a citation and an upcoming trial.

The sign written on a piece of white poster board simply read, “Check point ahead! Turn now!” Police had no problem with the sign itself advising of the upcoming checkpoint. In fact, Ohio law requires that the police advise the public of the exact location, date and even start and stop times of an upcoming checkpoint at least one week in advance, and then again a few hours prior. Their problem was with the sign’s instruction to “Turn now!” That, they said, was interference with police business and resulted in Odolecki receiving a violation.

God’s final checkpoint is just ahead. Yet many are speeding toward it completely unaware. For those who already know what lies ahead, there’s just one question: Where’s your white poster board? Where’s your warning to the souls of mankind to turn now from sin and be ready for the “check point?” Are you yourself heeding the warning? Believe in Christ (Jn. 8:24), repent of your sins (Lk. 13:3), be willing to confess the name of Christ (Mt. 10:32), be baptized for the remission of sin (Acts 2:38), and be ready for the “check point” – the Judgment.
