GOD’S LEDGER OF LIFE

INTRODUCTION

Most of us are familiar with the principle of bookkeeping

  • We have assets and liabilities.
  • When liabilities outweigh assets, we have a problem.
  • Assets and liabilities have a much wider application today

People in a company, or in religion, may be an asset, or a liability.

  • Too many liabilities make it impossible for either to succeed.
  • Daniel 5:27… Belchazzar was a liability
  • Matthew 12:30… the Pharisees were a liability

In similar fashion, there are many in the Lord’s church today who are liabilities to the cause of Christ.

  • Many are hurting or hindering the church
  • It is assets, NOT liabilities that will cause the Lord’s church to flourish

Let us consider the question: Which am I, a liability or an asset to the church?

DISCUSSION

ARE WE ZEALOUS WORKERS FOR THE LORD OR LUKEWARM CHURCH MEMBERS?

Asset: Zealous Worker

  • We are an asset to the church if we are willing workers in the kingdom.
  • 2 Corinthians 9:2

We are an asset to the Lord’s church through our zeal for good works for several reasons:

  • We provoke or encourage others to do the sameHebrews 10:24
  • The Lord’s work is accomplished

Notice these biblical examples of zealous workers:

  • Nehemiah 4:21
  • This occurred because “the people had a mind to work” (Neh. 4:6)
  • Isaiah 62:1

Liability: Lukewarm Church Member

  • We are a horrible liability to the Lord’s cause if we are lukewarm or halfhearted about the Lord’s work.
  • Notice what the Lord says about lukewarmness… Revelation 3:16

When we halfheartedly go about doing the work of the Lord we are a liability to the church because:

  • We discourage others
  • We are showing our children the Lord is not all that important
  • The Lord’s work is not accomplished

ARE YOU A LIBERAL GIVER OR ARE YOU COVETOUS?

Asset: Liberal Giver

  • Romans 12:1
  • The Lord says to “freely give” because you have been given so much (Mt. 10:8).
  • 2 Corinthians 8:1-12

We are an asset when we give liberally because:

  • We have proven that we have given ourselves wholly unto the Lord
  • We help the Lord’s work
  • We show concern for the Lord’s work

Liability: Covetousness

  • Ephesians 5:5
  • Hebrews 13:5

We are a liability to the Lord’s cause when we are covetous because:

  • We are robbing God (Mal. 3:8)
  • We are putting what the world has to offer above what God has to offer
  • Our heart is not right before the LorD

ARE YOU FAITHFUL OR ARE YOU A FORSAKER?

Asset: Faithful

  • Matthew 25:21
  • Luke 16:10
  • 1 Corinthians 4:2
  • Revelation 2:10

We are an asset to the church if we are faithful because:

  • We will not allow things to go undone
  • We will believe, do and teach that which is in accordance with God’s will
  • We will help the church to grow

Liability: Forsaker

  • Hebrews 10:25
  • 2 Corinthians 4:10

We are a liability to the church if we are a forsaker because:

  • We fail to exhort one another
  • We fail to manifest Jesus in our lives
  • We tear down the church

ARE YOU STUDIOUS OR IGNORANT OF GOD’S WORD?

Asset: Studious

  • 2 Timothy 2:15
  • 2 Timothy 3:14
  • 1 Timothy 4:13

We are assets to the Lord’s church when we are studious because:

  • We know truth from error
  • We understand what we are to do to be pleasing unto to God
  • God’s word will work in us

Liability: Ignorance

  • 2 Peter 3:5
  • Romans 10:3

We are a liability to the church when we are ignorant of God’s word because:

  • We fail to understand the very basics of Christianity
  • We will be swept into error
  • We will do thing our own way and not the Lord’s
  • We will weaken the church

ARE WE AN EXAMPLE OR A REPROACH TO THE CHURCH?

Asset: Example

  • 1 Timothy 4:12
  • Matthew 5:16

We are an asset to the church if we are a good example because:

  • We encourage others to faithfulness
  • We teach
  • We can win lost souls to Christ

Liability: Reproach

  • Proverbs 14:34
  • When we are a reproach to the church men will “blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called” (Jam. 2:7)

We are a liability to the church if we are reproach because:

  • We lower moral standards in the church and community
  • We set a bad example
  • We cause men to look down on the Lord’s church

CONCLUSION

Are you an asset or a liability to the church here?

  • Do you come with a solution or are you part of the problem?
  • Are you oil or sand in the machinery?
  • Are you a green light or a red light?

God keeps the books

  • He makes no mistakes
  • Some day He will demand a reckoning
  • A balance of the books

Will you be one who is found on the right side of the ledger?

DEALING WITH FALSE TEACHERS

DEALING WITH FALSE TEACHERS

INTRODUCTION
It cannot be truthfully denied that there are false teachers among us – the Bible warns of such:
Acts 20:29-30
1 Timothy 4:1-3
2 Timothy 4:1-4
1 John 4:1
2 Corinthians 2:17… corrupting the word of God *

It is equally clear that these false teachers must be dealt with
False teachers are a source of concern because of God’s view of them
As is clearly taught in Scripture
As will be seen in this lesson

The Psalmist said God hates every false way (Psa. 119:104), for His words are not false (Job 36:4)

Deuteronomy 13:5
An astounding testimony to the Lord’s view of false teachers
We too should take false teaching seriously

DISCUSSION
FALSE TEACHERS MUST BE DEALT WITH
Because they endanger the souls of men
Jeremiah 23:16-17
God had told Israel not to listen to the false prophet
They lie – they do not speak God’s word
But being more concerned with their own wants, they listen to the false prophet and found themselves in captivity
The same can happen to us

Ephesians 4:14
Many are being led away through false teaching
Tossed here and there – unable to be grounded

Ephesians 5:6
False teachers cause souls to become children of disobedience… they deceive
Friends, this brings God’s wrath

Acts 20:29-30
False teachers are as wolves devouring sheep
These false teachers will come from among the flock

Because they endanger their own souls
James 5:19-20
False teachers will lose their souls
We cannot let error slide – souls are at stake

James 3:1
We must be very careful what we teach
Teachers will be judged harsher

Because of their characteristics
Matthew 7:15
Deceitful
Ravening wolves

Acts 20:29
Grievous wolves
Unmerciful

2 Corinthians 11:13
Deceitful workers
They lie

Philippians 3:2
Evil workers
Dogs – Dogs in the east are mostly without masters; they wander at large in the streets and fields, and feed upon rubbish, and even upon corpses – they are considered unclean and contemptible

1 Timothy 6:5
Corrupt in mind
Void of truth

2 Peter 2:14
Misleaders of the unstable
Covetousness drives them

WHAT SHOULD OUR REACTION BE TOWARD FALSE TEACHERS?
1 John 4:1
We are to test every teaching
Check teaching with the word of God

Acts 20:31
Watch and remember warnings
Be alert to what’s going on in the church

Hebrews 13:9
Be careful not to be carried away
Stand your ground on the truth

2 John 10-11
Our association with the false teacher makes us a partaker of his evil
We are to have no fellowship with false teachers

Titus 3:10
To be rejected
A “heretic” is one who holds a fundamental error of doctrine

Ephesians 5:11
Have no fellowship with them
Rebuke their error

Titus 1:13
Rebuke them sharply
Sharply = quickly and plainly

Titus 1:11
Stop their mouths
We cannot put up with false teaching *

IMPORTANT QUESTIONS TO ASK AS WE DEAL WITH FALSE TEACHERS
Are we to be mean spirited as we confront the false teacher?
Ephesians 4:15
People do not care how much we know until they know how much we care *

Should we be quick to condemn?
2 Timothy 4:2
We should be patient, while not condoning error *

Are we to judge according to appearance, or hearsay?
John 7:24
Let us be sure we have evidence before we condemn.
If a little bird tells us something, be sure that the little bird is not a “cuckoo.” *

May we rebuke the false teacher without considering ourselves?
Galatians 6:1
Only hypocrites judge without considering themselves
Matthew 7:1-5 *

  1. Should we run roughshod over those in error?
    Titus 3:2
Would this not also include those in religious error? *

Should we over look an error for fear of offending someone?
    Matthew 15:13-14
It is better to hurt one’s feelings than to see that one spend an eternity separated from God. *

CONCLUSION
When we deal with false teachers our attitude toward them must consist of love, long-suffering, righteous judgment, self-examination, gentleness, and a heart free of prejudice

By having the proper attitude we may be able to get the false teacher to see the error of his way.

Remember, that which is false must be dealt with

DEATH IN THE POT

By Tom Moore

“And Elisha came again to Gilgal. And there was a dearth in the land; and the sons of the prophets were sitting before him; and he said unto his servant, Set on the great pot, and boil pottage for the sons of the prophets. And one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and gathered thereof wild gourds his lap full, and came and shred them into the pot of pottage; for they knew them not. So they poured out for the men to eat. And it came to pass, as they were eating of the pottage, that they cried out, and said, O man of God, there is death in the pot. And they could not eat thereof. But he said, Then bring meal. And he cast it into the pot; and he said, Pour out for the people, that they may eat. And there was no harm in the pot” (2 Kgs. 4:38-41). There are many valuable lessons to be learned from this biblical event – let us consider a few.

As there was a famine in land during the days of Elisha, so is there a famine of the word of God in our day. Amos writes, “Behold, the days come, saith the Lord Jehovah, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of Jehovah. And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east; they shall run to and fro to seek the word of Jehovah, and shall not find it.” (Amos 8:11-12). Friends, such seems to describe our day as well. In many places the word of God is not found. Many of pulpits are preaching more “philosophy” than they are the word of God – that’s a spiritual dearth! Can you hear the prophet’s cry, “My people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge” (Hos. 4:6). Will you heed the prophet’s cry? “If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God…” (1 Pt. 4:11).

The world, too, is starving without the gospel message. We need to provide the “bread of life” so the world will not hunger or thirst spiritually (Jn. 6:35). Friends, do you care enough for your family, your friends, and your neighbor down the road to help them in their spiritual famine? Will you be involved in teaching to help stop this terrible spiritual starvation?

But, let us beware lest we be as the servant of 2 Kings 4 and gather wild gourds and poison the pot. Many in our day think they are being fed good spiritual food – but in many places, “there is death in the pot!” There is “death in the pot” because false doctrine is being taught. It is the pure word of God that saves – not the doctrines of men. False doctrine is deadly whether it is a little or a lot. This is why Paul warned that “a little leaven leavens the whole lump” (1 Cor. 5:6). In rat poison, over 99% of the ingredients are good, but it is the other 1% that kills the rat. Friends, spiritually speaking, this is why we need to be concerned that we are true to the teaching of the Bible in every point.

But, consider this about the servant that gathered the poison gourds – he was sincere in what he did but still he poisoned his fellows. The servant “thought” he was doing the right thing, but he was fatally wrong. Many today are sincere in what they believe – but they are sincerely wrong. This is why it is so important that we examine ourselves (2 Cor. 13:5). What we think or what we feel in our hearts is not the test of truth – it is strictly what the Bible says.

We also need to be careful because just as the gourd looked good, and yet, was poisoned, so error can go around disguised as truth. Do you remember the warning of Jesus? – “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves” (Mt. 7:15). Things may not always be as they appear.  Friends, if there is “death in the pot,” then let us use the “meal” of God’s word to remove the poison. Add the “meal” to the pot and “serve it to the people” and you will find nothing “harmful in the pot.” Be careful lest there be death in the pot!

GROWING IN THE KNOWLEDGE OF CHRIST #2

GROWING IN THE KNOWLEDGE OF JESUS CHRIST #2

Building On Faith

INTRODUCTION

In the introductory lesson, we noted that growing in the knowledge of Jesus Christ…

  1. Involves the development of eight Christ-like graces
  2. Developed in conjunction with each other
  3. Requiring all diligence
– Thereby creating an octave of spiritual harmony best exemplified in the person of Jesus Christ

We observed five reasons why we ought to grow in the knowledge of Jesus Christ…

  1. Grace and peace are multiplied
  2. All things pertaining to spiritual life and godliness are provided
  3. Spiritual myopia and amnesia are avoided
  4. We will never stumble
  5. An abundant entrance into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord
  6. These are certainly sufficient reasons to spur development of a Christ-like character in ourselves!

In this study, we shall take a closer look at the first of these eight graces: “faith”

  1. Faith is the foundation of our spiritual development
  2. Upon which all other graces are to be “added”
  3. Developing a Christ-like character is therefore built upon faith.
  4. But one might ask: “What is faith?”

DISCUSSION

THE DEFINITION OF FAITH

  1. The Greek Word Is Pistis
  2. “a firm persuasion, a conviction based upon hearing” (Vine)
  3. “conviction of the truth of anything, belief” (Thayer) ©
  4. Used Primarily In Two Ways In The New Testament:

Subjectively (the faith we have)

  1. Such as our faith in God
    1.  “the conviction that God exists and is the creator and ruler of all things, the provider and bestower of eternal salvation through Christ” (Thayer)
    2. Used this way in Hebrews 11:6
  2. Such as our faith in Christ
    1. “the conviction that Jesus is the Messiah, through whom we obtain eternal
salvation in the kingdom of God” (Thayer)
    2. Used this way in Galatians 2:16

Objectively (the object of our faith)

  1. “the substance of Christian faith or what is believed by Christians” (Thayer)
  2. Used this way in Jude 3
  3. We are focusing on subjective faith (the faith we have) in this study

Faith Described In The Book Of Hebrews

  1. Faith is “the assurance of things hoped for” (Heb. 11:1a)
  2. Faith is “the conviction of things not seen” (Heb. 11:1b)
  3. Faith is having trust or confidence in things unseen by the human eye – again cf. Abraham’s faith – Hebrews 11:9-10

Faith is therefore that confidence or trust in God and Christ, regarding things promised or things not seen

Faith Is Not Gullibility

Gullibility in the sense of “blind faith”, trusting for no good reason

With this understanding of faith, one might also ask: “Is faith really that important?” Yes! Consider how faith is demanded of us…

THE DEMAND OF FAITH

It Is The Foundation For A Relationship With God

  1. Without faith, it is impossible to please God
  2. 1) We must believe that He is – Hebrews 11:6
  3. 2) God has no pleasure in those lacking in faith – Hebrews 10:35-39

Faith is the underlying element in our salvation and service to God

  1. The key that unlocks the way to salvation – John 1:12
  2. The motivating force behind our life of service – Galatians 2:20
  3. Without faith, we can’t even get started in our relationship with God!

It Is The Catalyst For Power From God

  1. There is power available to those who believeEphesians 1:18-20
  2. It is power beyond our imagination – Ephesians 3:20-21
  3. Power that enables us to overcome – 1 John 5:4-5
  4. Power that we should be careful about limiting – 2 Timothy 3:1-5

Growth requires power from God, and faith is required for such power!

  1. Can we not appreciate why Peter starts with “faith” in defining what it means to grow in the knowledge of Jesus Christ?
  2. It is the very foundation upon which to build a close relationship with God and Christ!
  3. But here is another question: “How can we have faith?”…

THE DEVELOPMENT OF FAITH

Developing Our Faith

Remember, faith is not gullibility (blind faith with no evidence)

  1. Instead, faith is based upon the Word of God – Romans 10:17
  2. The Word of God provides evidence to produce faith – cf. John 20:30-31
  3. Besides the testimony regarding the miracles of Jesus, other evidences include:
    1. Fulfilled prophecy concerning nations and the Messiah
    2. The scientific foreknowledge of the Bible
    3. The high moral standard it contains
    4. The continuity of the Bible despite it various sources

While we may “walk by faith, and not by sight” (2 Co 5:7), it is not truly a “blind faith”

  1. Since faith (i.e., trust, confidence) comes through the Word of God…
  2. We must be diligent in reading the Bible
  3. Only then will our faith become stronger
  4. Do we appreciate the value of the Word of God in producing the faith that pleases Him?

Maintaining Our Faith

We must guard against the sin of unbelief – cf. Hebrews 3:12-14

  1.  Many people lose their faith, especially when young
  2. Faith is maintained through constant reading or hearing of the Word
- and encouraging one another

We can also maintain faith through Paul’s threefold directive1 Timothy 6:9-12

  1. Flee materialism – undue concern for things of this world undermine our faith
  2. Pursue faith – this we can do by feeding on God’s word
  3. Fight the good fight of faith – the best defense is a good offense; be active in propagating the faith – cf. Jude 3
  4. The nation of Israel lost it’s faith in the wilderness, are we in danger of losing our faith during our sojourn?
  5. Finally, a thought or two about how faith in God manifests itself today…

THE DISPLAY OF FAITH

Through Obedience To The Gospel

The gospel of Christ requires obedience

  1. Jesus is the author of eternal salvation to those who obey Him – Hebrews 5:9
  2. The gospel Paul preached leads to obedience – Romans 1:5; 16:25-26
  3. Fearful consequences come to those who do not obey it – 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9

How does one obey the gospel? By obeying the commands of the gospel:

  1. The command to believe in Jesus – Mark 16:15-16
  2. The command to repent of sins – Acts 2:38; 17:30
  3. The command to confess Jesus – Matthew 10:32; Romans 10:9-10
  4. The command to be baptized for the remission of sins – Acts 2:38; 22:16

Have you displayed faith by “obeying from the heart” the doctrine presented in the gospel of Christ? – cf. Romans 6:17 ©

  1. Through Living For Jesus
  2. Trusting in His words
    1. Seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness – Matthew 6:33
    2. Doing what He says – Luke 6:46
    3. Observing all that He commanded – Matthew 28:20
  3. Trusting in His promises
    1. That He is preparing a place for us – John 14:1-2
    2. That He will return one day for us – John 14:3
  4. Are you setting an example of one who walks by faith in Jesus, and not just by what they can see with their eyes, or accomplish on their own strength?

CONCLUSION

Faith is a simple concept, but a crucial one…

  1. It is simply trusting in God and Jesus
  2. Regarding things not seen yet hoped for

Without faith, it is impossible to…

  1. Please God, for we must believe He exists, rewarding those who diligently seek Him
  2. Grow in the knowledge of Jesus Christ, for it is the basis upon which growth is built

May we allow the evidences of God’s Word to produce a faith that trusts and obeys a wonderful Savior, who in turn provides “exceedingly great and precious promises” as we grow in our knowledge of Him!
