THE AUTHORITY OF THE BIBLE

INTRODUCTION

We are living in a time when a great many people have little or no respect for authority.

  1. Our jails are full of those who do not respect the authority of our government.
  2. We have many children in our world today who do not respect the authority of their parents
  3. And there is a host of people who do not respect the authority of the Bible

We today need to recognize authority ….

The captain on the bridge of a large naval vessel saw a light ahead on a collision course. He signaled, “Alter your course ten degrees south.”

The reply came back, “Alter your course ten degrees north.” The captain then signaled, “Alter your course ten degrees south. I am a captain.”

The reply: “Alter your course ten degrees north. I am a seaman third-class.” The furious captain signaled, “Alter your course ten degrees south. I am a battleship.”

The reply: “Alter your course ten degrees north. I am a lighthouse.”

If we do not recognize where true authority lies – then we will be making many wrong decisions in this life – and especially spiritually speaking… EVERYTHING HINGES ON THIS

SOMETHING SMELLS

A hungry man was walking down the street in a village of medieval Turkey. He had only a piece of bread in his hand. He came to a restaurant where some meatballs were being grilled. The cooking meat was so near and the smell so delicious the man held his piece of bread over the meat to capture some of the smell. As he started to eat the bread, the angry restaurant owner seized him and took him away to see a judge.

The owner protested, “This man was stealing the smell of my meat without asking permission. I want you to make him pay me for it.” The judge thought for a moment, then held up his purse in front of the owner and shook it. “What are you doing that for?” asked the restaurant owner? The judge replied, “I am paying you. The sound of money is fair payment for the smell of food.”

Our challenge is to deal in true religion – NOT the “smells” of the “Religion of Liberalism,” the “Religion of Materialism,” the “Religion of Islam,” or the “Religion of Denominationalism.” True and actual religion can only be realized as we adhere strictly to the word of God. We must seek the “old paths” (Jer. 6:16), “stand in the gap” (Eze. 22:30), and “contend for the faith” (Jude 3) of God’s word. We must always “speak as the oracles of God” (1 Pet. 4:11), remembering “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death” (Pro. 14:12). We must realize like Jeremiah, “O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps” (Jer. 10:23). Remember, the Lord has only on true religion – one church and one body (Eph. 1:22-23; 4:4).

Join with me and “fight the good fight of faith” (1 Tim. 6:12) as we promote true religion!

Shake of Nod!

NAMES

A man is given three names: the name he inherits, the name his parents give him, and the name he makes for himself. A good name, like good will, is attained by many actions and may be lost by a single action. Never has a man who lived a life of ease left a name worth remembering. Remember, the best inheritance parents can leave a child is a good name. What kind of name do you have in the church and in the community?

Solomon said, “A goodname is to be chosen rather than great riches, Loving favor rather than silver and gold.” (Pro. 22:1).

LIFE IS SHORT

While visiting a space exhibit at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., Great Britain’s Princess Anne was introduced to Neil Armstrong. During her tour she noticed a display of astronauts’s spacesuits. Turning to Armstrong, the Princess asked, “Is there any danger of a rip?”The one who had taken great risks in being the first to walk on the moon replied, “Yes, the difference between life and death up there is only about one-hundredth of an inch of rubber!”

The same is true down here on earth – a very fine line separates life from death – time from eternity. The Hebrew writer said, “And inasmuch as it is appointed unto men once to die, and after this cometh judgment”(Heb. 9:27). Solomon said, “All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again”(Eccl. 3:20).

All of us will die unless the Lord comes first. If we are all truly honest with ourselves we know that we have no guarantees of being alive tomorrow. People are unexpectedly killed or die every day. Almost everyday we hear of some young person killed in an automobile accident. Since we have no promise of tomorrow, in the words of Peter, we should ask, “what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy living and godliness”(2 Pet. 3:11). Remember, “For God will bring every work into judgment, with every hidden thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil”(Eccl. 12:14).

Think About It!

Have A Great Day!

THE HARRIS AND MOORE EXPEDITION THROUGH THE BIBLE

THE BLOOD OF CHRIST

INTRODUCTION

Sin is the most terrible reality known to man

  1. In the very pronunciation of the word you can hear the hiss of the serpent and feel the sting of his fangs
  2. Every grave you ever stood alongside, every adversity that has laid you low, every tribulation that has assailed you, every tear that has dimmed your eye, every wrinkle that furrowed your brow, every sickness that has paled your cheek has come as a result of sin

Now, when we consider that the blood of Christwill remit and cleanse a person of sin, we can easily see the dynamic importance of a study of the blood of Christ

DISCUSSION

BLOOD IN THE SCHEME OF REDEMPTION

  1. In every age of time (Patriarchal, Mosaic, Christian) there has been great importance attached to blood in God’s divine scheme of redemption

Blood in the Patriarchal Age

  1. Able offered a bloody sacrifice; Cain did not – God was pleased with Abel (Gen. 4:1-12)
  2. After the flood, Noah offered a bloody sacrifice unto God (Gen. 8:20)
  3. Abraham offered a bloody sacrifice unto God (Gen. 12:7-8)
  4. Bloody sacrifices were offered in connection with the institution of the Passover (Ex. 12:1-3)
  5. Some may not see the connection between the blood on the doorposts and the firstborn not being slain – but that’s the way it was
    • Some may not see the connection between baptism and the blood of Christ
    • But, the Scriptures teach that’s the way it is

Blood in the Mosaic Age

  1. In this age blood sealed the covenant of God… Hebrews 9:18-20
  2. The tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry were sanctified with blood… Hebrews 9:21-22
  3. Also, in addition, there were many regular animal sacrifices which they offered continually (Lev. 1-7)
  4. These bloody sacrifices, though, could never take away sins…Hebrews 10:1-4
  5. Though animal sacrifices could not take away sins, they were shadows of that which was to come – it was the blood of Christ which actually had the power to take away sins
  6. You can never pick apples from the shadow of an apple tree; however, if you follow the shadow it will lead you to the tree where you can pick apples
  7. In like manner, the blood of animals of former generations could never remit sin, but they led men to the blood of Christ which could

THE BLOOD OF CHRIST AND ITS BENEFITS

That Christ should die for the sins of the world was foreseen in prophecy

  1. Isaiah 53:5
  2. Zechariah 13:1
  3. John 11:49-52
  4. These prophecies were fulfilled in Christ’s death on the cross

The blood of Jesus redeems

  1. Ephesians 1:7
  2. Colossians 1:13-14
    • Redeem” means to buy back
    • We were sold under sin; however, the blood of Christ redeemed us
  3. It is interesting to note that Jesus’ blood had redemptive power, not only for those who lived under the New Testament, but also for those who lived in former dispensations
    • Hebrews 9:15
    • Romans 3:23-25
    • The cross points from Eden to eternity

The blood of Christ washes sins away

  1. Revelation 1:5-6
  2. It is important to remember that the sinner is defiled
    • Titus 1:15
    • Isaiah 1:16
  3. The sinner is in need of washing, of a cleansing, the blood of Jesus can accomplish this

The blood of Christ justifies

  1. Romans 5:9
  2. The sinner is condemned… John 3:18
  3. Sinners bear the guilt of having transgressed God’s law…1 John 3:4
  4. Consequently, the sinner stands in need of justification, that is, being absolved of his guilt

The blood of Christ sanctifies

  1. Hebrews 13:12
  2. Sanctify” means set apart to a holy and divine purpose
  3. As blood was used to dedicate the priests and the vessels under the old law, so does the blood of Christ do the same for us today

The blood of Christ reconciles

  1. Colossians 1:20
    • The sinner is separated from God… Isaiah 59:1-2
    • The sinner is alienated from God… Ephesians 4:18
  2. Thus the sinner is in need of reconciliation:
    • 2 Corinthians 5:19-21
    • Romans 5:10-11
  3. The blood of Christ makes this reconciliation possible

The blood of Christ purges the conscience

  1. Hebrews 9:13-14
  2. The sinner’s conscience is defiled… Titus 1:15
  3. The result is the need of having his conscience purged
  4. The blood of Christ will do this

The blood of Christ purchased the church

  1. Acts 20:28
  2. From this we can clearly perceive that the church of our Lord is a very vital, important, soul saving institution
  3. Think! In order for the church to become a reality, Jesus had to shed His blood
  4. Deduction: ALL our hope is built on the blood of Christ

HOW DOES ONE CONTACT THE BLOOD OF CHRIST?

Let’s say you have an illness that a certain drug has the power to cure

  1. To be cured we understand that we must come in contact with the drug
  2. The same is true regarding the blood of Christ

But how do we come in contact with the blood of Christ?

  1. John 19:34
  2. Romans 6:3
  3. Christ shed His blood in His death, and we are baptized into His death
  4. Therefore, in baptism we contact the blood of Christ

But notice also… Matthew 26:28

  1. Acts 2:38
  2. The blood of Christ remits sin, and baptism remits sins
  3. Therefore, in baptism one contacts the blood of Christ and sins are remitted

And finally, consider this… Revelation 1:5

  1. Sins are washed away by the blood of Christ
  2. Acts 22:16
  3. The blood of Christ washes away sin, and baptism washes away sins
  4. Therefore, in baptism one come in contact with the blood of Christ and his sins are washed away

CONCLUSION

  1. Song: “What can wash my sins away? Nothing but the blood of Jesus!”
  2. The blood of Christ redeems, washes sins away, justifies, sanctifies, reconciles, purges one’s conscience, and bought the church to which the saved are added (Acts 2:47)
  3. Have you come in contact with the blood of Jesus?

KINDNESS

At a Special Olympic Event, some time ago, 9 special athletes were competing in a 100-yard dash. As the starting pistol shot and the race started, one runner tripped and fell to the ground, crying out loud in pain. One runner, a girl, stopped, turned back to him, kissed his cheek and said, “There, that will make you feel better!”  One by one, each of the runners went back to help the fallen runner, together, they locked arms and carried him from the track.

The crowd, overcome with emotion from what they were witnessing, cheered and gave a 10-minute standing ovation.

While each of these athletes would have loved the thrill of winning the race, their sense of kindness and teamwork lead them to act selflessly.

In our daily lives, we don’t see acts of kindness like this often enough. Today, I would like to encourage each of you to do what you can to make someone else’s day brighter – the effect that it will have on your life and other’s is profound.

“Love suffereth long, and is kind” (1 Cor. 13:4) and “be ye kind one to another” (Eph. 4:32).

Think About It!

STRANGE CHOICE

Here is a strange choice:

“But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews? They cried out therefore again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber”(Jn. 18: 39-40). Isn’t strange that they would choose a contemptible breaker of peace to be released – who made their lives perilous and insecure, and rejected the Lord of life?

No stranger, I guess, than when many choose the broad way to destruction as opposed to the narrow that leads to life eternal (Mt. 7:13-14). What kind of choices are you making in life?

Think About It!

Have A Great Day!

LANDMARKS

During World War II allied armies marched into Germany on their way to Berlin. Retreating German soldiers switched road signs and destroyed landmarks in an effort to confuse their enemy. And, to an extent, it worked, for many a G.I. followed a false marker only to end up in the wrong place. That just goes to show the need for landmarks, the importance of reliable signposts by which to steer.

Locally we all have landmarks as well – the courthouse, etc. that are important in helping us find our bearings. Why, if some villain came in one night and removed our signposts, the next day would become a bewildering jumble of uncertainties, and we’d all be lost.

The Israelites had custom of setting boundary stones to mark out property. Just as we do today, so our Hebrew forefathers did then. Wells, fords, buildings, and stone sentinels were their guides. Hence the strict law: “Remove not the ancient landmark, Which thy fathers have set” (Pro. 22:28).

We live in a day of rapid change, and this law is being grossly ignored. Our spiritual heritage is being bulldozed to clear the way for ungodly development. Many professors, authors, and preachers are twisting the guideposts in the minds and hearts of many a wandering soul. Bible traditions are forgotten, and “thus saith the Lord” is being ignored. The result is spiritual chaos – social confusion and rootless individualism. We live in a society that’s lost its bearings and is adrift on a sea of ungodly change.

Friends it’s time to get back to the Bible. “Remove not the ancient landmark, Which thy fathers have set.”

Think About It!

Have A Great Day!

“A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart and sings it back to you when you have forgotten how it goes.”

GOD’S WATCHMAN

INTRODUCTION

The prophet Ezekiel lived in a dark time.

  1. In the space of less that 20 years, three loads of Israelites were dragged from the promised land – away from Jerusalem, away from the temple – even away from God Himself it seemed.
  2. Even the king himself, Jehoiachin, was in exile.
  3. Ezekiel was supposed to be a priest, serving at the temple in Jerusalem, but there he was in Babylon – far from Jerusalem, far from the temple.

In the midst of all of the trouble, God wanted a man to watch for, and to give warning to his people.

  1. Jeremiah was God’s watchman in Judah.
  2. Daniel was God’s watchman in the king’s of palace.
  3. Ezekiel was God’s watchman among the people by the river Chebar. Let us first consider…

DISCUSSION

THE TASK OF THE WATCHMAN

  1. Ezekiel 2:3… There they were, God’s people, children of Abraham – in a foreign land, a strange country, because of their sin – their rebellion against God!
  2. Notice what else God tells Ezekiel… Ezekiel 2:5-6
    • They were to know that a prophet had been among them…
    • Today, the brethren must know that a faithful gospel preacher has been among them – not some sissyboy preacher – but one who contend for the faith
    • Question – will the world around us, your friends, your co-workers, your family know that a faithful Christian has been among them?
  3. Yes indeed, the time of Ezekiel was a dark time
    • Unfaithful Israel had abandoned God
    • Sin and death was preferred, rather than obedience and life.
    • He is encouraged not to be afraid of them, or their words, or their looks… and neither should we today!
    • Yet God still wanted his people to come back.
  4. So, He gives them a watchman… Ezekiel 3:17
    • A merciful God gave a watchman to protect their life.
    • Beware, of those who hold God’s watchmen in contempt and rebel against the mercy of God.

And what is his task as watchman?

  1. First one needs to understand what a watchman is… Ezekiel 33:1-6
  2. Imagine a small city or town which needs protection.
    • To prevent the city from being overrun, walls are built up around the city.
    • There are gates of course, but as long as there is sufficient warning, these can be closed and defended.
    • The one way that the enemy has a chance of conquering this city is to take it by surprise – to get through those gates before anyone realizes it, and while they are undefended.
    • To ensure that they have plenty of warning in the event of an enemy attack, a man with a very important job is posted on the city walls.
  3. There stands the watchman, high on the walls.
    • 1) He has to be high up, so that he can see far into the distance.
    • 2) His eyes scan the horizon constantly, panning the countryside, squinting in the bright light and searching for any sign of movement.
  4. No matter what the weather, no matter how tired he is, he must stick to his task – he is a watchman!
  5. If there is going to be an attack, he must see it.
    • 1) He must see it as soon as becomes visible
    • 2) He must blow the trumpet and blow it loud and long, to warn the people, to wake them up, to put everybody on the alert.
    • 3) That is his task Watching and warning!
  6. The spiritual watchman must do two things:
    • He must watch – that is, he must hear God’s Word.
      • Read and study… 2 Timothy 2:15; 1 Timothy 4:13
      • Understand what the will of the Lord is (Eph. 5:17)
      • But he can only do this if he is knowledgeable in the Scriptures – he then has the ability to spot that which is false
      • Many do not know that an enemy is approaching because they do not know the Scriptures well enough
      • He must fall asleep at his post
    • He must warn – that is, he must bring God’s Word.
      • He must announce it to God’s people.
      • Preach the whole council of God
      •  Today it is imperative to bring God’s word to all people (Matt. 28:18-20).
  7. Simple isn’t it?
    • Yes, it is simple, and yet very difficult at times.
    • Ezekiel was indeed a good watchman, but the message he had to bring wasn’t exactly a popular one
      • God’s message today is not always popular
      • God’s message concerning salvation, the one church, moral issues, etc.
      • As watchman, he had to announce God’s word of condemnation because of their sins… even if the people didn’t like it

And there were also false prophets. They did not bring God’s Word – rather, they brought a message which the people wanted to hear, a message which they invented.

  1. Isaiah 30:10
  2. These, the false prophets, were the watchmen memtioned in… Isaiah 56:10
  3. Can you imagine a blind watchman – The enemy comes, and no one sees them. As they enter the gates there is no-body who blows the trumpet.
  4. Before they realize it, they are being killed, as the voice of the blind watchman on the watchtower echoes off the walls … “Don’t worry, all is well.”

THE MESSAGE OF THE WATCHMAN

First of all, we must notice to where he is sent.

  1. God says “I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel” (Eze. 3:17)
  2. The watchman is concerned with God’s people.
  3. These are the people that God compared with briers and thorns and scorpions!
  4. Ezekiel, the watchman, must go to these same people and give them a “Thus saith the Lord

God gave them a watchman – to protect their life!

  1. He doesn’t want them to die in their sin, but wants them to live… Ezekiel 33:11
  2. God wants to give his people life, that’s why he sends His watchman – to protect their life!
  3. We must do the same today – Titus 1:13

Ezekiel is also sent to the world about him, they also need warning.

  1. We too are sent to the world
  2. Mark 16:15-16

The message the watchman must bring is a serious one, it’s a matter of life and death.

True life is in fellowship with God, and restored fellowship is with Him through Christ’s blood

  1. In Christ, sins are removed, they are washed away.
  2. But that gift of life can only be enjoyed in the way of continued obedience.

The watchman, Ezekiel, and the watchmen of the new covenant must bring that same message.

  1. Ezekiel was, and we are, watchmen of the covenant.
  2. The church needs to be reminded about God’s word, His covenant promises and threats, His covenant demands and obligations.
  3. The world needs to be told that there is no hope for them outside of Christ (2 The. 1:8).
  4. Watchmen are needed!

THE RESPONSE TO THE WATCHMAN

First of all, let’s consider what God’s response is to the watchman.

  1. He will judge the watchman for his faithfulness.
  2. Since God gives his people a watchman to protect their life, that means that the watchman who doesn’t do his job properly is endangering the life of the people.
  3. The watchman who fails to blow the trumpet is responsible for their souls.

In the church…

  1. Elders are responsible… Hebrews 13:17
  2. Preachers are responsible… 1 Corinthians 9:16; Acts 20:20, 27
  3. Each member also bears responsibility… Galatians 6:1-2

Perilous times demand God’s people to be watchful

Often, though, God’s message is rejected.

  1. Many will never give ear to God’s word (Neh. 9:30)
  2. God’s word, many times, will be met with rebellion and bitterness by those whom the word cuts (Acts 7:54).
  3. Some will be almost persuaded, but they too will be lost (Acts 26:28).
  4. But friends, those few who gladly receive the word and obey it, make all our efforts worthwhile.

Watchman must keep on watching.

  1. A watchman who won’t watch is like:
  2. A defective smoke detector, or an air bag with holes
  3. Worse yet, the blood of the souls of men will be on his hands
  4. We must keep watching for the souls of men

CONCLUSION

Remember, we are God’s Watchman
