READINESS

A United States Army officer told of the contrast in his pupils during two different eras of teaching at the artillery training school at Fort Sill, Oklahoma (Home of the Field Artillery). In 1958-60 the attitude was so lax that the instructors had a problem getting the men to stay awake to hear the lectures. During the 1965-67 classes, however, the men, hearing the same basic lectures, were alert and took copious notes. What made the difference in the class of 65? They knew that in less than six weeks they would be facing the enemy in Vietnam.

Friends, do we not realize that each of us are facing a power enemy today? This is why Peter declared, “Be sober, be watchful: your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Pet. 5:8). We are in a spiritual battle and Satan is doing all that he can to bring us down. The question that we must ask ourselves is are we lax in our preparation for the battle? Are we awake to the dangers that are ahead? Are we studying carefully our field manual, the Bible? Are we implementing these battle tested procedures in the heat of our daily skirmishes with temptation? Are we alert to and content against the enemies’ deceptions, false doctrine? Beloved, “war the good warfare” (1 Tim. 1:18), “fight the good fight of the faith” (1 Tim. 6:12), “be watchful” (1 Pet. 5:8), and “be ready unto every good work” (Tit. 3:1).

YOU ARE INVITED

Wedding alerts have really evolved over the years. First we had formal wedding invitations. Then formal, pre-invitation “save the date” notices became quite trendy. Now even emailed invitations and E-vites are becoming mainstream.

So what’s the newest wedding alert fad? “You’re NOT Invited” alerts! Say what?!

Well, with the growing influence of social media, so much information about wedding plans, dates, times, locations is available online that many friends and acquaintances are simply assuming they are invited – and then showing up! The unexpected, uninvited “guests” are making for some pretty awkward moments, and are translating into some unexpected and unbudgeted costs and fees.

To stem the tide of uninvited guests, couples are now sending out “not invited” alerts ahead of their big day. Couples on a tight budget are especially jumping on the uninvited band wagon. Some are sending formal un-invitations via regular mail. Others are sending out email blasts or Facebook group messages.

Most are crafted with gentle, and even penitent wording. Take this one for example:

“We’ve had to be pretty brutal in chopping down our guest list. I’m so sad that you won’t be there with us on the day, but we look forward to catching up afterwards!”

As gentle as this alert sounds, you’ll probably still feel the sting of rejection. Better prepare yourself now, because one day soon you will likely receive an uninvited alert, too.

Aren’t you glad that God excludes no one from His guest list? In fact, quite the contrary of sending out a “You’re not invited” alert, He has gone the extra mile, tracking people down on the “highways and byways” (Mt. 22:1ff) to invite each and every one to the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. The trouble is many refuse the invitation, while others fail to make the proper preparation required. Friends, you are invited the Marriage Feast accept the invitation by believing on Jesus (Jn. 3:16), repenting of your sins (Lk. 13:3), confess the sweet name of Jesus (Rom. 10:9-10), and be immersed in water for the remission of your sins (Acts 2:38). Come, all things are ready.

Will you obediently accept the invitation of the Almighty?

Think About It!

Have An Awesome day!

ARE YOU READY?

Who would have thought that relatively powerless persons could bring shifts in history? Gandhi, an unsuccessful lawyer, adapted the teachings of the Sermon on the Mount and the writings of Tolstoy and became the key to bringing independence to India, because he was ready.

Rosa Parks, in refusing to move to the back of the bus in Montgomery, sparked the beginning of the civil rights movement of the ’50s and ’60s. She was a rather inauspicious person to take such a critical action, but she was ready.

Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life in prison. He was released to bring a shift in the politics of South Africa at a critical juncture when many thought either that change would never come or if it did, it would be accompanied by a vast bloodbath. The transition to a more just society came relatively peacefully under his leadership after he was unexpectedly released from prison. Prison had prepared him, made him ready.

The apostles (some lowly fishermen) were considered by many of their peers as ignorant and unlearned (Acts 4:13), but they turned the world upside down (Acts 17:6). These men were prepared and ready.

Here is a question for you: Are you ready? Are you preparing yourself to make a difference for the Lord? Many have excuses for not making a difference, or feel as if they are not making a difference. Others are wondering how they can make a difference. Friends, we can all make a great impact for the Lord is we will just prepare ourselves for the task ahead. How do we prepare ourselves? Dig deep and saturate yourselves with the word of God, and then implement these vital biblical truths in your everyday walk of life. Live each day as a faithful child of God and you will be making impact on our world.

Are you ready?

AFFLUENZA

Someone recently invented a wonderful word that graphically portrays the sickness that so often comes from material abundance – affluenza. We have all heard of influenza, but have you heard of affluenza? The definitions of “affluenza” include these:

1. The bloated, sluggish and unfilled feeling that results from efforts to keep up with the Joneses.
2. An epidemic of stress, overwork, waste and indebtedness caused by the dogged pursuit of
the American Dream.
3. An unsustainable addiction to economic growth.

We often are consumed with what is really least important in life. Solomon, in the book of Ecclesiastes, was searching for the “True Meaning to Life” and one road on this search lead him through the way of materialism. What did he find? True lasting happiness was not found there. Solomon declared, “Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labor that I had labored to do; and, behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was no profit under the sun” (Eccl. 2:11). Paul warned us that “But they that are minded to be rich fall into a temptation and a snare and many foolish and hurtful lusts, such as drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil: which some reaching after have been led astray from the faith, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows” (1 Tim. 6:9-10).

Beloved, should not our focus be on spiritual matters? You know it should. Wealth will not get us to heaven, as a matter of fact, wealth will hinder many from their heavenly goal. Thus, we need to take to heart Solomon’s conclusion at the end of his search for the true meaning to life: “This is the end of the matter; all hath been heard: fear God, and keep his commandments; for this is the whole duty of man. God will bring every work into judgment, with every hidden thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil” (Eccl. 12:13-14).

Are you suffering from affuenza?

Was the Pope correct?

Tonight on the Harris and Moore Expedition through the Bible we will be discussing the Pope’s recent statement: “If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?”

Tune in at http://www.harrisandmoore.org or http://www.knowthetruthradio.org tonight at 7:00pm CST as we discuss this statement – Is it true or false? You have heard what men have said not listen to what the Bible says.

THE SOUL AT DEATH

THE SOUL AT DEATH

INTRODUCTION
A. We are keenly aware of the reality of death
1. I am sure that we have had friends and loved ones who have ceased to have life in the
body.
2. Hebrews 9:27
B. The body is said to be “mortal””(Rom. 8:11)
1. The word “mortal” means that it is subject to death, or dying is in its nature.
2. However, such is not said concerning the soul … 2 Corinthians 4:16
3. Thus man has a duel nature – of body and soul
4. Daniel speaks of his spirit as being distinct from his body when he wrote, “My spirit was grieved in the midst of my body” (Dan. 7:15).
C. I am sure that we are all interested in knowing what happens to the soul at death, and until the end of time.
1. These questions we propose to answer this morning
2. What is the condition of the soul at the point of death?
DISCUSSION
A. The Soul at Death is in a DEPARTED CONDITION
1. Men of the ancient past have pondered the state of the soul at death … Job 14:10
a. Job knew without question where the body went at death
b. Job was asking where the spirit of man went at death
2. Defining “death” will help us to understand the answer
a. “Death” comes from a Greek word that means a separation of the soul from the body by which the life on earth is ended.
b. Several scriptures describes death in this manner
1) Genesis 35:18
2) James 2:26
3) 2 Corinthians 5:8
B. The Soul at Death is in a CONSCIOUS CONDITION
1. There are those who contend that the soul at death is unconscious or asleep
a. However, the word “sleep” in reference to death refers to the restful state of the body – not the soul
1) The death of the body is described as a “sleep”
2) Daniel 12:2
3) John 11:11, 14
b. The soul or the spirit continues in consciousness
1) This is seen in the account of the rich man and Lazarus (Lk. 16:19-31)
2) God is a SPIRIT, and does not have to depend on a physical body for his existence (Jn. 4:24)
3) Likewise, the SPIRIT of man does not need a physical body to be alive.
2. The dead are ALIVE in the departed realm
a. Matthew 22:31-32
b. Luke 20:38
C. The Soul at Death is in a FIXED CONDITION
1. It is important to realize our destiny at death is fixed by the deeds of the body
a. 2 Corinthians 5:10
b. John 12:48
c. Hebrews 5:9
2. God has never promised us a second chance
a. Luke 16:26
b. Neither is the soul kept in some limbo, unfeeling condition while waiting for the judgment.
3. There are blessings and consequences for conduct that are reserved before the judgment day.
a. This is true in this life
1) The righteous are saved and enjoy God’s fellowship and have hope of heaven
2) The wicked are condemned and live without the hope of heaven.
b. In the departed life, it is also true that there are blessings and consequences of sin before the Judgment
1) The rich man was tormented because of sin … Luke 16:22-24
2) Lazarus was comforted because of righteousness
a) Luke 16:25
b) Revelation 14:13
3) In Hades, the soul is in the environment for which has prepared himself.
4. In the judgment, the soul and the resurrected body will receive its just due
a. Hebrews 9:27
b. John 5:28-29
5. In view of the value of the human soul, it behooves us to prepare our soul for death
a. Matthew 16:26
b. If you were going to take a test for a driver’s license, you would want to prepare yourself by studying all you could about the law and driving regulations
c. If you were going to take a test for a civil service job, you would want to study the subject matter upon which you are to be tested.
d. Likewise, since you realize your soul will exist after death, you should want to learn what to do to get ready for that event.
D. The Soul at Death is in a HEAVENLY CONDITION
1. Some believe the souls of the righteous go immediately to heaven, and the souls of the wicked go immediately to hell – at the point of death.
2. But the Bible teaches that a soul at death goes to HADES or SHEOL
a. This is seen when looking at the account of Lazarus and the rich man (Lk. 16:19-31)
1) Lazarus … Abraham’s bosom
2) Rich man … torment
b. We also see that HADES will not be abandoned until after the judgment day (Rev. 20:13-14).
3. HADES is obviously in the heavenly realm (rather than earthly), so to be in HADES is to be in a heavenly condition, but not in God’s immediate presence.
E. The Soul at Death is in a PERSONAL CONDITION
1. By personal, I simply mean “identifiable,” as to their personality and conduct in life
a. Moses and Elijah were identifiable (Mt 17:1-5)
b. Lazarus and the rich man were identifiable (Lk. 16)
c. Certain Christian martyrs were identifiable with their martyrdom (Rev. 6:9-11)
2. But someone might say, If we keep our identities after death how can we be happy in heaven if we know of a loved one who will not be there?
a. We may have loved ones now who are not right with God, and this brings us grief, but we are still able to enjoy the fellowship that we enjoy with the Lord now
b. If we can be happy now in spite of the fact that loved ones are lost, we will be able to enjoy heaven if loved ones are lost.
c. Notice Psalm 16:11
F. The Soul at Death is in a INCOMPLETE CONDITION
1. At death the soul and the body are separated (Jam. 2:26)
a. The soul is unclothed without the body … 2 Corinthians 5:1-4
b. The Christian yearns for the resurrection of the dead
1) 1 Corinthians 15:50-54
2) Philippians 3:10-11
2. Since death is a separation of the soul and body, the resurrection will be a reuniting of the soul to a more glorious body … Philippians 3:20-21
CONCLUSION
A. In what state is your soul in at this very moment?
B. If you are putting off obeying the Lord – you are taking a chance of experiencing the greatest loss ever
C. If your death should come today, how would you stand before God?

ALIVE IN CHRIST

ALIVE IN CHRIST
Ephesians 2:1-10

INTRODUCTION
A. Someone once said that “those born once must die twice, while those born twice must die but once.”
B. The statement that “those born once must die twice” is made in view of the fact that
1. One born physically must die physically
2. And, one born who have never become a Christian will after the Judgment suffer the “second death” (Rev. 20:12-15); i.e. eternal destruction (1 The. 1:7-9)
C. The statement that those “born twice must die but once” is made because:
1. All men must die (Heb. 9:27)
2. Yet those who are “born again” (Jn. 3:3-5) and remain faithful (Rev. 2:10) shall avoid the second death.
D. In Ephesians 2:1-10 we are informed that we who were once dead in sin are made alive in Christ.
1. The Ephesians’ former condition (Eph. 2:1-3)
2. The Greatest news ever (Eph. 2:4-7)
3. The amazing grace of God (Eph. 2:8-10)
DISCUSSION
A. THE EPHESIANS’ FORMER STATE (2:1-3)
1. In chapter 1 of Ephesians, Paul discusses what God wrought IN Christ, and now in chapter 2 will discuss what God wrought THROUGH Christ in men who “were dead through their trespasses and sins.”
a. Paul is saying that God raised, exalted and glorified His Son – “AND YOU”!!!
b. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead can give us new life
c. Paul said you “WERE dead through your trespasses and sins”
1) “Dead? means separation; cf. Isaiah 59:1-2
2) “Trespasses” has reference to an error, a mistake in judgment, a blunder
3) “Sin” literally means to “miss the mark”
d. Sin had killed them – they were separated from God
2. In verse 2 Paul tells them that they “ONCE walked according to the course of this world,” i.e. involved in trespasses and sins
a. They were in conformity with the standards of the world, in CONTRAST with the standard of God.
b. All this was done “according to the prince of the powers of the air,” i.e. as Satan would have you be.
c. Verse 2 describes Satan as “the spirit that now worketh in the sons of disobedience.”
1) This shows that Satan is ultimately behind all the evil in the world
2) Those who are called “sons of disobedience” are called such because their characteristics are the like the “disobedient one” – Satan
3) To be a “son of disobedience” is to be an “offspring of the disobedient one”
3. In verse 3 Paul proclaims, “among whom (i.e. the sons of disobedience) WE ALSO ALL ONCE lived in the lusts of our flesh”
a. “We…all” were like this at one time
1) Romans 3:23
2) Children are sinless, for one must transgress God’s law to sin … 1 John 3:4
b. We are told that we once fulfilled the “desires of the flesh and of the mind.”
1) This involves doing the works of the flesh (Gal. 5:19ff)
2) These are sins done in action and thought
c. What is the result of this disobedient life? We become “by nature children of wrath”
1) “Nature” comes from the Greek word physis and means a mode of feeling and action which by long habit becomes one’s nature or way of life.
2) A continued disobedient attitude will lead one not to know anything else
4. Paul says the Ephesians were once like this
B. THE GREATEST NEWS EVER (2:4-7)
1. We were all condemned to an eternal hell when we sinned, “but God” intervened!!!
a. Why??? ….Because God is “rich in mercy,” cf. Ephesians 1:7
b. Why is God rich in mercy??? …Because of His “great love wherewith he loved us,” cf. John 3:16
2. Verse 5 tells us that God did this even though we were “dead through our trespasses.”
a. Sin separates us from God
1) When we sin we are repulsive to God
2) God would have been completely righteous if He would have left us in our condemnation
b. BUT, thanks be to God who “made us alive together with Christ”
1) Romans 5:8-11
2) How is this made available to us? … Romans 6:3-5
c. Without God’s “grace” there would be no salvation
3. Paul goes on to tell us in verse 6…
a. How are we raised up with Christ? … Colossians 2:12
b. When we are raised up with Christ through baptism we will reign with Him … Revelation 5:9-10
4. Verse 7 tells us that we have an obligation to tell others of the rich blessings that God’s grace provides through Jesus, for how can others know of God’s kindness unless we tell them
C. THE AMAZING GRACE OF GOD (2:8-10)
1. Paul says in verse 8, “for by grace have ye been saved through faith…”
a. God’s “grace” involves ALL that God had done to bring about salvation to mankind
1) Promise of a redeemer
2) Preservation of the Messianic lineage
3) Prophets
4) Death of Jesus for our sins
5) The blood of Jesus which cleanses our sins
6) The Holy Spirit which inspired the Bible writers
7) The simple plan of salvation
8) The simple plan of restoration
9) The church for propagating the gospel
b. “Faith” involves ALL that man must do to partake of the salvation that God has so graciously provided
1) Belief in Jesus as the Son of God
2) Repentance
3) Confession of Christ’s Deity
4) Baptism
5) Shouldering the responsibility of the kingdom
6) Living the Christian life
7) Worship
c. Paul goes on to say that this divine act of saving us is “not of yourselves, it is the gift of God.”
1) Our salvation was not prepared by man, neither is it earned by man
2) It was prepared by God and bestowed on man by God
2. Paul in verse 9 proceeds to tell us that this grace is “not of works, that no man should glory”
a. The works of man’s devices allow glorying, but salvation does not come through such works
b. We receive God’s grace by doing the works of God!
1) Salvation is God’s work – NOT MAN’S
2) 1 Thessalonians 1:3
3) Philippians 2:12
c. God appoints certain things to be done, man must do them to be saved
1) When they are done man is doing God’s work
2) Man is not saved by doing works of the old law or his own works, but by doing the works of God
3. Verse 10 tells us that one of the reasons we were created was to do the works of God
a. The church is divinely instituted for the purpose of doing “good works”
b. From the beginning of time this was in the mind of God
4. To say that we are saved by grace without doing any works of God is to condemn oneself to eternal torment

WANTED: PREACHERS LIKE THE PROPHETS

from an unknown author…

Today, men cannot be prophets in the same sense as in the Bible. But we need the same caliber of spokesmen today as these men were. Notice some of the qualities of these men.
1) They were men of deep conviction. They were convinced of their message and the need for people to respond to it (Jer. 4:19).
2) They did not “beat around the bush” in getting the message across. Nathan, in confronting David with sin, said, “Thou art the man” (2 Sam. 12:7).
3) They did not fear the reaction of men. Elijah denounced King Ahab’s sin (1 Kings 21:20).
4) They did not go along with the crowd. Read about Micaiah who stood against 400 false prophets (1 Kings 22).
5) They were willing to suffer and die for God’s cause (Heb. 11:37).
6) They had grief and pity (Jer. 8:18).
7) They proclaimed judgment. For most of the prophets, this was a recurring theme (Micah 3:12). Judgment must be preached today (Acts 17:30,31).
8) They rebuked false prophets and leaders (Micah 3:11).
9) They spoke out on morality and ethics. Amos said, “Forasmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor, and ye take from him burdens of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink…” (Amos 5:11).
10) They became discouraged, but not defeated. Jeremiah did not quit! He said, “If I say I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name, then there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with forbearing, and I cannot contain” (Jer. 20:9).

Are you a preacher like the prophets? We must be careful of “smooth things” (Isa. 30:10).

THE TROUBLE MAKER

You will recall in 1 Kings 17:1, “Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the sojourners of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As Jehovah, the God of Israel, liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.” Elijah, God’s spokesman, informed Ahab that because of his great wickedness God was going to withhold the rain. Later in 1 Kings 18, after three years of drought, God instructs Elijah to confront Ahab once again. Elijah goes to meet Ahab, “And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Is it thou, thou troubler of Israel? And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father’s house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of Jehovah, and thou hast followed the Baalim” (1 Kgs. 18:17-18).

Ahab was accusing Elijah of being a troublemaker. But Elijah informs Ahab who was the real troublemaker. The real troublemaker was Ahab who had “forsaken the commandments of Jehovah.” It was Ahab and his father that had brought great trouble to Israel. Ahab accused Elijah of troubling the people so that the calamity in Israel would be blamed on the true prophet of God, and not Ahab himself.

Today there are a host of false prophets (sissy-boy preachers) in the church who are screaming, as did Ahab, that God’s true prophets (doctrinally sound gospel preachers) are causing trouble in the church. We hear the faithful gospel preacher being called a “hatchet man,” “unloving,” “ultra-conservative,” “divisive,” “close minded,” and a host of other names, because they are sticking closely with the oracles of God, and opposing and exposing that which is false. Who caused trouble in Israel?

Was it Elijah for adhering strictly to the word of God, or Ahab who had forsaken the commands of God, that was causing trouble? It was Ahab! Today, those standing for truth are not troubling spiritual Israel, but those who preach another gospel (Gal. 1:6-9), who preach the doctrines of men (Mt. 15:9), who will not contend earnestly for the faith (Jude 3), and those whose god is their belly (Phil. 3:19) – just to name a few.

Who caused trouble in Israel in the days of Joshua when they went down to battle against Ai? It was Achan who had disobeyed the commands of God (Jos. 7:20-21)! Thus, Joshua asked Achan, “Why hast thou troubled us? Jehovah shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones; and they burned them with fire, and stoned them with stones” (Jos. 7:25). Here we observe that it was disobedient Achan that troubled Israel and we see how God views troublemakers!

Again, many are accusing God’s faithful proclaimers of truth of being troublemakers, simply because they stand for and herald the truth of God’s word. Is this not exactly what happened to Paul and Silas in Acts 16:20? The magistrates said, “These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city” (Acts 16:20). In Acts 17:6 they were accused of “turning the world upside down.” Why were Paul and Silas accused of being troublemakers? The reason, they had the courage to stand up and proclaim the whole counsel of God (Acts 20:27). These men of God were not going to allow the crying and whimpering of the sissy-boys to keep them from “speaking the oracles of God” (1 Pt. 4:11) – and neither should we! Paul declared, “Am I therefore your enemy, because I tell you the truth?” (Gal. 4:16)

Beloved, the troublemakers in the church are the false teachers, the “change agents,” and the theologically liberal who are promoting and believing that which is contrary to the word of God. Those who stand for truth do not trouble the church – but those who will not stand for and believe sound doctrine.

Those who teach that there are Christians in all the denominations and teach that we are saved by grace alone trouble the church. Those misguided souls who are trying to change a woman’s role in the church and who disregard God’s law of divorce and remarriage trouble the church. The false teachers who espouse that we should have fellowship with the denominations and who want to bring in the mechanical instrument of music in worship trouble the church. Those who ridicule book, chapter, and verse preaching, and who want sermons of love preached each Sunday trouble the church. The list could go on and on!

Friends, it is not those who stand for truth that trouble the church, but those who do not.

Think About It!

Have A Great Day!
