WHAT CHRIST BRINGS

WHAT CHRIST BRINGS
Ephesians 2:11-18

INTRODUCTION
A. It is important for Christian to remember and reflect
1. 1 Corinthians 4:17
2. 2 Peter 3:1
B. In Ephesians 2:11-18, Paul is reminding the Ephesian Christians where they WERE and where they are NOW
1. We need this today as Christians, that is, to be reminded of where we were and where we are now, lest we become lackadaisical in our Christian walk.
2. When a Christian thinks of his life as a non-Christian, he should be even more thankful for his life as a Christian
C. Ephesians 2:11-12
1. Before they had become Christians they were:
a. Held in contempt by the Jews
1) The Jews by their corruption of truth were keeping many Gentiles from the Lord
2) Today many are corrupting truth…
b. “Separate from Christ” (“without Christ” – KJV)
c. “Alienated” from spiritual Israel
d. “Strangers from the covenants of the promise”
e. “Having no hope”
f. “Without God”
2. What did these Gentiles do about their terrible situation? or what could they do?
a. They had to rely on Christ!
b. Notice what Christ brings!!!
DISCUSSION
A. CHRIST BRINGS US NEAR TO GOD (v. 13)
1. Paul says, “but now”
a. But now the gospel has come into force
b. Those who were once “far off” are brought near unto God
2. They were “made nigh”
a. There was a removal of the barrier between Jew and Gentile
b. There was a removal of the barrier between them and Christ
3. This was all accomplished “in the blood of Christ”
a. Hebrews 9:13-14
b. 1 Peter 1:18-19
4. Thus, we see Christ’s true love for us … John 15:13
a. Notice what kind of friends we were:
1) Romans 5:6-8
2) We were “enemies” of God! (Rom. 5:10)
b. Could there be any greater love than that of Christ’s?
B. CHRIST BRINGS US PEACE (vs. 14-15)
1. Christ brings peace by bringing men together as “one” (v.14)
a. In times past they were two parties, Jew and Gentile, but this dualistic separation has ceased
b. Now there is a unity between all obedient believers
c. Galatians 3:27-28
d. Notice how we keep this unity … 1 John 1:7
2. Christ brings peace by breaking down all barriers (v. 14)
a. The “middle wall of partition” is a picture take from the temple.
1) The temple had many courts and barriers separating each; .e.g. the court of the Gentiles, the court of women, etc.
2) Christ broke down all these barriers
b. All now have access to the Holy of Holies (heaven)
c. Thus there are to be no barriers of race, wealth, dress, ability, etc.
3. Christ brings peace by wiping out the “enmity” of the law against us (v. 15)
a. By being crucified on the cross, Christ abolished the law of Moses
b. The law of Moses brought enmity because no one could keep it perfectly, therefore, no one could be justified by the law of Moses
c. Christ removed this enmity
4. Christ brings peace by creating a “new man” (v. 15)
a. It is through the new law, the law of Christ, that a man can be created anew
1) As opposed to the enmity that prevailed between Jew and Gentile
2) As opposed to the old man of sin
b. John 3:3-5
c. 2 Corinthians 5:17
C. CHRIST BRINGS US RECONCILIATION (vs. 16-17)
1. The word “reconcile” comes from a Greek word that means to change, to change thoroughly, to bring together,
to restore, to turn hostility to friendship
2. Reconciliation came by means of the cross
a. When we sin we need to be reconciled (Isa. 59:1-2)
b. The cross of Jesus made this possible
1) 2 Corinthians 5:18
2) Colossians 1:19-20
3. We learn about this reconciliation through the preaching of the gospel
a. We have been given the “ministry of reconciliation” (2 Cor. 5:18)
b. Romans 1:16
c. That’s why the gospel is “good news”
D. CHRIST BRINGS US ACCESS TO GOD (v. 18)
1. This does not mean that all men will be saved, but all men will have opportunity to be
saved
2. We gain access to the Father “through His Son”
a. John 14:6
b. Hebrews 10:19-20
c. But, we must travel the right way
1) Proverbs 14:12
2) Matthew 7:13-14
3. We also have access to the Father “in one Spirit”
a. This occurs when we obeys the words of the Spirit revealed in the New Testament
b. When we obey the Bible we are led by the Spirit unto the Father
4. Because of the Son and the Holy Spirit, we have a very special relationship with the Father
a. Galatians 4:6-7
b. Our relationship with the Father, if we are a Christian, is both personal and paternal
CONCLUSION
A. It is important for us to remember that:
1. We were separated from God
2. Christ brought us near to God
3. Christ brings us peace
4. Christ brings us reconciliation
5. Christ brings us access to God
B. When we forget these things we lose sight of them, and then we lose sight of God and become lukewarm and unfaithful.

NO REASON FOR FEAR

The late advice columnist Ann Landers use to receive something like 10,000 letters a month. When asked what seems to be the most common topic, she answered that most people seem to be afraid of something. They are afraid of losing their health, their job, or their family. They are afraid of upsetting their neighbor, alienating a friend, or committing a social faux pas. Many are even afraid when there is no reason to be afraid. Ours is a world of fearful people.

For the Christian fear is a problem that plagues their ability for happiness and their effort in the cause for Christ. Paul warned, “For God gave us not a spirit of fearfulness; but of power and love and discipline” (2 Tim. 1:7). Friends, fear shows we are weak in faith and love. Remember, “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 8:37-39). “There is no fear in love: but perfect love casteth out fear, because fear hath punishment; and he that feareth is not made perfect in love” (1 Jn. 4:18).

A PLACE OF PEACE

In 1520 Ferdinand Magellan battled for an entire year to find a passage around South America. There at the very tip of the continent, in its icy waters he encountered some of the worst weather anywhere on earth. Raging seas, towering ice floes, and a mutinous crew plagued his efforts. When he finally made his way through those straits (which today bear his name – the Straits of Magellan), he entered into a great body of water that lay beyond, and as he and his men lifted their faces to heaven and gave thanks to God, he named the new ocean “The Peaceful One – the Pacific Ocean.”

Jesus was preparing His disciples for tough times. He was about to ascend to the Father and they would be on their own, left to find their way through this world alone. And yet, they would not be alone, for He would be with them in the Comforter (Jn. 14:26).

Jesus desires to lead us in the same way to a place of peace. It is His desire to direct our feet and steer our lives from the paths that would lead to hell to His place of peace. Jesus says, “Let not your hearts be troubled” (Jn. 14:1), for He has given us all we need to safely make the journey to a place of peace (2 Tim. 3:16-17; 2 Pet. 1:3). Remember the words of Paul, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Phil. 4:13; NKJ).

STANDING BEHIND US

There was a nature show on television about a black bear that gave birth to two cubs. One cub died right away. Three weeks later the mother died and the remaining cub was left to fend for itself. An orphaned cub in that condition is like a walking buffet for predators. And of course the camera immediately showed a hungry-looking mountain lion.

One day the orphan cub encountered a giant male black bear. The little cub cowered at the bear’s sheer mass. The larger bear peered around and seemed to realize that the mother bear wasn’t anywhere to be found. He gave the little cub a friendly nudge. The camera then showed the little bear happily trailing along after the larger one. The adoption papers were signed, sealed and registered at the county seat in that nudge. Papa bear proceeded to show the cub how to grub for insects and how to catch fish and how to scratch his back against a tree.

One day the two bears became separated. The cub began to cry and looked frantically for his new father, but couldn’t find him anywhere. The cub approached a stream where he’d learned to fish and something caught his attention. He looked up to see a mountain lion ready to pounce. That same mountain lion had stalked the cub for the entire show. There was no way that mountain lion would’ve gone for that cub with Papa bear around, but now….

The camera zoomed in on the cub. He automatically mimicked the posture of his adopted father when threatened. He stood on his hind legs and bared his teeth. Then, in the exactly the same way his new father would have done, this cub let loose a mighty growl that should have reverberated throughout the forest. But, only a tiny bear cub squeak came out.

Well, you know what was coming. But, to everybody’s astonishment the mountain lion lowered his head and ran off in the opposite direction.

The camera panned back to the proud little cub still standing tall on his hind legs. And then all the viewers saw what that little cub could not: a few yards behind him, at full, ferocious height, his sharp, white teeth bared in a snarl, stood Daddy bear. He may not have made a sound, but he was there.

And even though the cub couldn’t see his father, his father stood guard, protecting his young. The little cub had power available greater than anything he could produce on his own. There was a greater power watching over him.

Spiritually speaking, we have a Father that watches over us and protects us. The power we need to overcome life’s difficulties cannot be found alone in ourselves, we need help and guidance. Our Father has provided us with what we need for protection and guidance… “seeing that his divine power hath granted unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that called us by his own glory and virtue” (2 Pet. 1:3). We have armor for battle (Eph. 6:10ff), a weapon for the conflict (Eph. 6:17; Heb. 4:12), prayer for strength (Jam. 5:16), brethren for encouragement (2 Cor. 1:3-4), and promises of victory (1 Cor. 10:13; Rom. 8:37).

Friends, God is standing behind us!

ITS TIME TO TAKE A STAND

Tonight on the Harris and Moore Expedition Through The Bible we will be discussing why Churches/Preachers are not making a godly impact of society and politics like they once did. Are churches/preachers now more interesting in “tickling ears” and entertainment than standing boldly for the truth and condemning error?

Listen in tonight at http://www.harrisandmoore.org or http://www.knowthetruthradio.org at 7:00om CST as we discuss this important topic. This is a live call-in program, – so call in with your comments or questions (1-855- QA BIBLE)

FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT

The apostle Paul declared, “Fight the good fight of the faith, lay hold on the life eternal, whereunto thou wast called, and didst confess the good confession in the sight of many witnesses” (1 Tim. 6:12).

Those who wish to “lay hold on eternal life” must “fight the good fight of faith.” There is no path to heaven that does not lead through territory occupied by the devil. If we are to reach our desired destination, we must fight. Indeed, it sometimes seems that we have to fight every step of the way.

We should be careful in our conclusions, though. Just because we are experiencing conflict that does not by itself guarantee that we are on the right path. There is such a thing as carnal combat, and those who engage in it often do not have the honesty to see that their agenda is their own rather than God’s. But even so, there is no denying that warfare is inevitable if we are serious about seeking God. To reach forward, we have to struggle with sin.

Are we cowardly? If we are too timid to fight for what is right, we will not make it to heaven. In Revelation 21:8, the list of those who will be lost eternally is headed by the “fearful” [cowardly – ESV, NKJ]. If we take the course of least resistance, we will end up somewhere other than the realm where God is. It takes courage to seek Him truthfully.

Are we careless? Considering the intensity and intelligence of our adversary, we ought not to be naive. We are being nothing more than foolish if we think we can serve God faithfully and never experience any difficulty. Peter said, “Wherefore girding up the loins of your mind, be sober and set your hope perfectly on the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ” (1 Pt. 1:13).

The good fight of faith is a personal struggle against what the devil is trying to do to us and the Lord’s church. We need, then, to “withstand” him [resist him – ESV, NKJ] (1 Pt. 5:9). We need to fight for our lives with commitment and courage. We need, with real indignation, to draw the line and refuse to yield a single inch to our adversary.

Think About It!

EXPECTING DEFEAT

There is evidence of failed marriages all around. A cartoon strip showed a young woman talking to a minister. She said, “John and I are having a terrible time, and we need your advice. We are trying to decide how to divide the furniture, who gets what of the money we’ve saved and who gets custody of the children.”

“Oh,” the minister asked, “are you contemplating divorce?”
“Oh, no,” she replied. “We are trying to work out our prenuptial agreement.”

Sadly, far too many are entering their marriage relationship with a defeatist attitude. Anyone entering into marriage need to heed the words of Jesus, “Have ye not read, that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh? So that they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder” (Mat. 19:4-6).

One of the keys to a lasting marriage is going into the relationship knowing that it is a life-long commitment. The scriptures teach that a couple going into a marriage desiring to please the Lord above all else will be a lasting, beautiful, and loving relationship.

Another key to a beautiful and lasting marriage is seen in these words of our Lord, “All things therefore whatsoever ye would that men should do unto you, even so do ye also unto them” (Mat. 7:2). This statement is passionately referred to as the “Golden Rule.” This simple, yet profound, truth must implemented in every successful marriage. Always treat your spouse like you would want to be treated.

Remember, too, that love for your spouse must be shown in action (1 Jn. 3:18).

Go into marriage expecting something beautiful and lasting – NOT expecting defeat.

TRUE GREATNESS

In Matthew 20:20-21, we have an account of the mother of James and John (the sons of Zebedee) coming to Jesus desiring a favor of Him. This mother’s wish was that her two sons would be granted the privilege of sitting with Jesus in His kingdom – one being seated on the right hand and the other on the left. In Mark 10:35-37, we observe that James and John joined their mother in the request – they were eager to be first in the kingdom and have special seats.

Evidently, James and John wanted to be elevated above the other disciples. They, as well as their mother, misunderstood the nature of the kingdom, and the principle which makes one great in God’s kingdom. The worldly ambitions of these disciples had not allowed them to see clear – they could not see beyond the physical realm.

Jesus replies to their request in Matthew 20:22-23. Our Lord first informs them that they had no idea for what they were asking. Jesus asks, “Are ye able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?” – that is, the cup of suffering. James and John responded, “We are able.” Jesus then says, “My cup indeed ye shall drink: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left hand, is not mine to give; but it is for them for whom it hath been prepared of my Father.”

At the end of Jesus’ statement we observe that “when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation concerning the two brethren” (Mt. 20:24). The ten, it seems, were moved with displeasure and maybe even jealousy at their attempt to obtain chief seats in the kingdom.

Jesus knowing the prevailing attitude of His disciples begins to show to these disciples what true greatness involves (Mt. 20:25-28). Jesus informs His disciples that His kingdom would not be like the kingdoms of the world. In the kingdoms of this world, those who are considered great, are those of high rank, rule and authority. Jesus quickly points out that greatness in an earthly kingdom is not greatness in His kingdom. In fact, greatness in Christ’s kingdom is the opposite of greatness in the earthly kingdom. Jesus said if you want to be great in My kingdom be a “servant.” The Lamb of God said, “but whosoever would become great among you shall be your minister; and whosoever would be first among you shall be your servant: even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many” (Mt. 20:26-28). Jesus is saying, if you want to be great – then minister; if you want to be first – then be a servant to others.

Jesus gave the perfect example, and is the perfect example of greatness, for He “GAVE himself a ransom for all…” (1 Tim. 2:6), and He “existing in the form of God, counted not the being on an equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men; and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, becoming obedient even unto death, yea, the death of the cross” (Phil. 2:6-8). This is the most magnificent example of greatness to be found!

Beloved, if we want to be great in the Lord’s church – then we must be servants! A Preacher’s greatness is not found in the number of Lectureships he speaks on. An Elder’s greatness is not found in the title. A Deacon’s greatness is not found in the position. A Christian’s greatness is not found in social status. Greatness is found in SERVICE!
