NO DONUTS

The Patriot Ledger reports: Tuesday, the city’s licensing board approved a plan to open a Honey Dew Donuts at the cafe counter inside the new $30 million YMCA … It will be the only Honey Dew store in Quincy. … Because of the Y’s focus on physical fitness, the vendor won’t sell doughnuts, said Sara Trubiano, spokeswoman for the South Shore YMCA said. … The new Honey Dew will sell coffee, low-fat muffins, salads, sandwiches, yogurt, fruit cups and smoothies, Trubiano said. All menu items first must be approved by Y leadership.

How ironic! A donut shop which agrees to sell no donuts. Sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it? But isn’t that exactly what people do when they compromise the Truth in order to please the world? A donut shop should sell donuts, and a Christian should seek to please God! “We must obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29). “For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? or am I striving to please men? if I were still pleasing men, I should not be a servant of Christ” (Gal. 1:10). “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him” (1 John 2:15).

Friends, “Buy the truth, and sell it not” (Pro. 23:23).

WHY I AM A MEMBER OF THE CHURCH OF CHRIST – 2

WHY I AM A MEMBER OF THE CHURCH OF CHRIST #2

INTRODUCTION
A. Why are you a member of the church of Christ?
1. If you are not a member of the church of Christ, why are you a member of the religious organization that you are?
2. Is it because that was the one your Dad and Mom were members of?
3. Is it because that is the one closest to your home, or has the nicest building in town?
4. Is it because it because you think that one church is as good as another?
B. If our neighbor were to ask us why we were a member of the church of Christ, could we give them a sound reason?
1. Isaiah 41:21
2. 1 Peter 3:15
3. If your neighbor were to say that one church is as good as another, how would you answer them?
C. Over the next few weeks we will be answering the question: “Why am I a member of the church of Christ?”
E. Previously we studied that I am a member of the church of Christ because:
1. It was founded by the Scriptural Builder – Christ
2. It was founded on THE Scriptural Foundation
DISCUSSION
A. I AM A MEMBER OF THE CHURCH OF CHRIST BECAUSE IT WAS FOUNDED AT THE SCRIPTURAL PLACE – JERUSALEM
1. If a person should be a member of some church first founded in London, Rome, Salt Lake City or New York, he cannot be a member of the Lord’s church.
a. The Lord’s church did not have its origin in any of these places
b. Man just cannot be a member of the scriptural church unless he is a member of the church founded at the scriptural place.
2. Let us consider some passages which point to the place where the Lord’s church was established:
a. Isaiah 2:2-3
1) From this prophecy we learn, first, that The Lord’s house would be established in Jerusalem.
2) Second, the Lord’s house would be exalted and all nations would flow into it.
3) Third, the time of fulfillment would be in the “latter (or, last) days”
4) The apostle Paul spoke of “the house of God, which is the church of the living God” (1 Tim. 3:15).
5) Thus, the Lord’s house is the church, and Isaiah tells us that it will be established in Jerusalem in the last days.
b. Micah 4:1-2 … the same prophecy, almost verbatim, as Isaiah.
c. Zechariah 1:16 … So once again the Holy Spirit taught that the church was to have its origin in Jerusalem
d. Jesus, in giving His worldwide commission, taught that Jerusalem was to be the starting place of the church
1) Luke 24:46-49
2) From this passage we notice:
a) Christ had to suffer and rise from the dead before repentance and remission of sins could be preached in His name.
b) The proclamation of this message was to begin at Jerusalem.
c) And they were to tarry in Jerusalem until they be endued with power from on high – the Comforter of John 14:26
3. Let us now consider the fulfillment of these passages:
a. The Holy Spirit was not to come until Jesus had gone away … John 16:7. The apostles saw Jesus ascend out of their sight in Acts 1:9.
b. The apostles were commanded to tarry in Jerusalem (Lk. 24:49). After the apostles watched the Lord’s ascension they returned unto Jerusalem (Acts 1:12), the appointed place; and there they tarried.
c. The apostles were to be clothed with power from on high (Lk. 24:49)
1) In Acts 2:1-4 we read of the fulfillment…
2) The Holy Spirit was to come and we see that it did come in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost
d. The word of the Lord was to go forth from Jerusalem in the last days or later days (Isa. 2:2-3; Mic. 4:1-2)
1) We have the fulfillment of this prophecy in Acts 2:14-42 in which a stirring sermon was preached in Jerusalem.
2) This occurred in the last days; for Peter quoted Joel’s prophecy (Joel 2:28-32) as proof of that which was to come to pass in the last days.
3) Hence, this was the right place and the right time
e. Repentance and remission of sins was to be preached in the Lord’s name, beginning at Jerusalem (Lk. 24:47) … This was the message of Peter … Acts 2:38
f. The Lord’s house (the church) was to be established in Jerusalem in the last days (Isa. 2:2-3; Zech. 1:16)
1) And that is when and where it was established.
2) Notice Acts 2:41, 47
3) Beginning at this time we find the church being spoken of as a reality, while prior to this it was spoken of as a future institution.
4. So, according to the prophecies and their fulfillment, the Lord’s church, the church of Christ, had its origin in Jerusalem.
a. This is the church of which I am a member!!
b. This is the church you must be a member of…
B. PLANTING THE SAME CHURCH IN ANY COMMUNITY AND AGE IS DEPENDENT UPON SOWING THE SAME SEED INSTEAD OF CHURCH SUCCESSION
1. Even if a man could trace an institution, year by year, back to its establishment, he would have no assurance that it was the identical institution that existed in the beginning.
a. Over a period of years, a church could so apostatize that it could no longer be the true church.
b. The apostle Paul said that there would come an apostasy, or a falling away:
1) Acts 20:29-30
2) 1 Timothy 4:1-3
c. These passages make it clear that an apostate church would grow out of the true church
2. Thus, we had better be interested in seeing if we are sowing the same seed that was sown by the apostles.
a. Jesus says that “the seed is the word of God” (Lk. 8:11).
b. If we sow the same seed the apostles sowed, the same church will spring forth … Galatians 6:7
c. Every seed produces after its kind:
1) Sow corn, you get corn…
2) When the seed of the kingdom was sown in the first century, you did not get different denominations.
3) Today if the seed of the kingdom is planted in its purity you will not get a denomination, you will have the church of Christ.
4) Denominations exist today because the seed of man has been sown
3. We must realize that if all the growing corn throughout the world was destroyed, corn would not be destroyed as long as it exists in seed.
a. The same is true concerning the church!
b. As long as the seed of the kingdom exists the true church will never be destroyed
c. Jesus said … Mark 13:31
d. If we want to have the church in any community, we must do as Paul and Apollos did … 1 Corinthians 3:6
CONCLUSION
A. I am a member of the church of Christ because
1. It was founded by the scriptural builder – Christ,
2. It was founded on THE scriptural foundation – Jesus Christ
3. It was founded at the scriptural place – Jerusalem

WHY I AM A MEMBER OF THE CHURCH OF CHRIST – 1

WHY AM I A MEMBER OF THE CHURCH OF CHRIST? #1

INTRODUCTION
A. Why are you a member of the church of Christ?
1. If you are not a member of the church of Christ, why are you a member of the religious organization that you are?
2. Is it because that was the one your Dad and Mom were members of?
3. Is it because that is the one closest to your home?
4. Is it because it has the nicest building in town?
B. Illustration
The husband asks his wife who asks the mom, who asks the grandmother, why the end of the ham is cut off before cooking it…
C. If our neighbor were to ask us why we were a member of the church of Christ, could we give them a sound reason?
1. Isaiah 41:21
2. 1 Peter 3:15
3. If your neighbor were to say that one church is as good as another, how would you answer them?
D. Over the next few weeks we will be answering the question: “Why am I a member of the church of Christ?”
DISCUSSION
A. I AM A MEMBER OF THE CHURCH OF CHRIST BECAUSE IT WAS FOUNDED BY THE SCRIPTURAL BUILDER – CHRIST
1. No church can be scriptural unless it was founded by THE scriptural builder.
a. The fact that a religious body exists is proof that it was founded by someone.
b. There are at least 3,000 different religious groups in the world today!
1) Thus each group will either be scriptural or unscriptural, and will have either a scriptural or unscriptural builder.
2) We must know who the builder was of each religious organization to know if it is scriptural
c. If a church is founded by a scriptural builder it is scriptural, but if it is founded by an unscriptural builder it is unscriptural
2. Christ founded the scriptural church
a. In proof… Matthew 16:18
1) Therefore, it is certain that no church can be scriptural unless it was founded by Christ
2) If a church was founded by John Calvin, Joseph Smith, John the Baptist, or any other man it is not scriptural.
b. Jesus, in keeping with His promise to build the church, gave Peter the authority to state the terms of admission into the kingdom or church.
1) Matthew 16:19
2) Peter later stated these terms on the day of Pentecost when the church was established in Acts 2:38, 41, 47.
3) No human being ever had the authority to do what Jesus did, that is, establish a church.
3. In our day and time it is also important to note that John the Baptist did not establish the church
a. There are many in our world today who assume this and take on the name “Baptist”
b. But it is important to note that John the Baptist was dead when Jesus promised to build His church
1) In Matthew 14:10 we read that John was beheaded
2) Notice that about 1 year later in Matthew 16:18 that Jesus promised to build His church
c. John the Baptist was a great man, but he did not establish the church
d. Notice also that John the Baptist was never a member of the church or a citizen of the kingdom
1) Matthew 11:11
2) How was it possible to be one of the greatest born of woman, and yet, the least in the church would be greater than he? The answer…
3) John was not in the kingdom/church
4. The Bible tells us that other churches, not established by Jesus, would be rooted up.
a. Jesus, concerning false religion, said… Matthew 15:13
b. Jesus said this during the time of the law of Moses
1) God planted the Hebrew religion, and all other religions would be rooted up.
2) If God would uproot other religions in the time of the law of Moses, would He not do the same today under the Christian system?
3) The Christian system is superior to the law of Moses, and God would not lower His standards.
B. I AM A MEMBER OF THE CHURCH OF CHRIST BECAUSE IT WAS FOUNDED ON THE SCRIPTURAL FOUNDATION
1. It is important to realize that a good foundation is of extreme importance.
a. It is a recognized fact that no building can be stronger than the foundation on which it rests.
1) No structure built out of proportion with the foundation can stand long
2) A church is no exception – Its stability and benefits depend upon its foundation
b. A scriptural church must have a scriptural foundation; otherwise, it would not be scriptural.
2. What is this foundation upon which the scriptural church is to rest?
a. Matthew 16:18
b. The church is to be built on the “ROCK”
1) This “rock” is not Peter
a) “Peter” comes from petros meaning a pebble
b) “Stone” – petra meaning a ledge stone
2) The stone on which the church was to rest was the confession that Peter made in Matthew 16:16
3) Thus, the church was not founded on the weakness of human flesh, but on the divinity and Sonship of Jesus
c. Other verses prove this interpretation to be true:
1) 1 Corinthians 3:11 … Ephesians 2:19-20
2) Psalm 118:22
a) Jesus applied this prophecy to Himself (Mt. 21:42)
b) Paul applied this prophecy to Christ… Acts 4:11
3. The sublime foundation that Christ is the Son of God has stood and will continue to stand.
a. The malicious and combined attacks of the opposition have not been able to weaken this foundation.
b. The infidels, atheists, modernists and skeptics have raved and ranted, but Christ remains the Son of the living God
c. This foundation may truly be compared to an anvil that as worn out many hammers:

Last eve I passed beside a blacksmith’s door,
And heard the anvil ring the vesper chime.
Then, looking in, I saw upon the floor,
Old hammers, worn with beating years of time.
“How many anvils have you had,” said I,
“To wear and batter all those hammers so?”
“Just one,” said he, and then, with twinkling eye,
“The anvil wears the hammers out, you know.”
And so, thought I, the anvil of God’s word,
For ages skeptics’ blows have beat upon;
Yet, though the noise of falling blows was heard,
The anvil is unharmed – the hammers gone.
d. Today this foundation stand secure and firm
e. Voltaire once boastfully declared that there would not be a copy of the Bible on the earth in a hundred years. It has been more than a hundred years since this blasphemous prophecy was given, and it is no closer to fulfillment now than it was then. As a matter of fact, on the same printing press on which this infidel’s prophecy was issued, Bibles are now being printed by the Geneva Bible Society.
4. What about the institutions founded by men?
a. They are resting upon sand, they are weak and will fall.
b. Christ’s church will come through triumphantly, for it is resting on a tried stone, a sure foundation.
CONCLUSION
I am a member of the church of Christ because: It was founded by the scriptural builder – Christ, and it was founded on THE scriptural foundation – Jesus Christ

VANILLA

VANILLA ICE CREAM DEFIES EVOLUTION
Author Unknown

Nearly everyone has enjoyed a yummy bowl of vanilla ice cream. It is a wonderfully delicious dessert. However, vanilla ice cream wouldn’t even exist if evolution were true.

Let’s start out with a little history. Until more recent times, Mexico was the only producer of vanilla. In the 1520s, a man by the name of Hernan Cortes traveled down to Mexico and loved vanilla. So, he brought some back with him to Europe .

For the next 300 years, the Europeans tried but were never able to produce vanilla. See,vanilla grows up a tree as a vine. Eventually the vine produces an orchid. In order to make the vanilla bean, the orchid must be pollinated. The problem is, it only blooms one morning per year for pollination. If it isn’t pollinated within 12 hours, it withers. To make things more difficult, a hood like membrane covers the part of the vanilla orchid which produces pollen. This makes the production of the vanilla bean very difficult.

In 1836, Charles François Antoine Morren traveled down to Mexico to figure out why they weren’t able to produce vanilla beans in Europe . As Morren was studying the vanilla orchids, his attention was drawn to a little bee (the Mexican Melipona Bee). This bee landed on the orchid, lifted up the little hood like membrane, collected pollen, and then flew off to the next flower. This bee was pollinating the orchids. After some time, the orchid produced a vanilla bean. To this day, the Mexican Melipona Bee is the only insect that knows how to pollinate the vanilla orchid.

This simple fact puts evolution in an extremely difficult position. Without the Mexican Melipona Bee, we simply would not have vanilla today. The bee and the vanilla vine had to be made at the exact same time. Not to mention, this bee had to be given specific information about how to pollinate the vanilla orchid. Again, no other insect knows how to do this. This bee had to be made, designed, and purposefully created to pollinate the vanilla orchid, and thus, produce vanilla.

So much of our world points to the Creator. As silly as it sounds, even vanilla ice cream proclaims the glory of God. So, the next time you sit down to enjoy a full bowl of vanilla ice cream, remember that you are enjoying a tasty treat which is only possible through the power of God!

“The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament showeth his handiwork” (Psa. 19:1). “I am fearfully and wonderfully made: Wonderful are thy works” (Psa. 139:14).

Think About It!

Have A Great Day!

ARE YOU A TRUE DISCIPLE?

ARE YOU A DISCIPLE OF JESUS?
Matthew 28:18-20

INTRODUCTION
A. Matthew 28:18-20 … This statement was made by Jesus to His apostles shortly before He ascended to heaven
B. Commonly called “The Great Commission,” notice the main thought of Jesus’ command…
1. “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations…”
2. To “make disciples,” therefore, is the GOAL of evangelizing the world for Christ
C. Are you a disciple of Jesus?
1. More than likely you believe in Jesus…
2. You might even be one to attend church services regularly
3. But is that what it means to be His disciple?
D. The purpose in this study is to make clear what is involved in being a true disciple of Jesus Christ
DISCUSSION
A. THE DEFINITION OF A DISCIPLE
1. THE WORD “DISCIPLE”
a. The word “disciple” literally means a learner
b. According to Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words, it denotes “one who follows another’s teaching”
c. But a disciple was not only a learner, he was also an adherent
d. For this reason disciples were spoken of as imitators of their teachers.
2. THE GOAL IN BEING A DISCIPLE
a. Stated by Jesus himself: to be like the teacher – Luke 6:40
b. To be Christ’s disciple, then, is to strive to be like Him!
c. According to the apostle Paul, this coincides with God’s goal in the redemption of mankind, that they be conformed to the image of His Son – Romans 8:29
3. Do you have a strong desire to follow Jesus and become like Him?
a. Unless you do, it cannot be said that you are truly His disciple!
b. There are also some “identifying marks” of discipleship given by Jesus which can help us to further identify a true disciple of Jesus…
B. THE MARKS OF A DISCIPLE
1. A DISCIPLE IS “ONE WHO ABIDES IN JESUS’ WORDS” – John 8:31
a. This would imply being a diligent student of the teachings of Christ
b. It also requires one to be a “doer” of the Word
1) Matthew 7:21-27
2) James 1:21-25
c. In view of this, a true disciple would not…
1) Fail to study the Bible diligently
2) Willingly refrain from opportunities to study with others (e.g., Bible classes, church services, gospel meetings)
2. A DISCIPLE IS ALSO “ONE WHO LOVES THE BRETHREN” – John 13:34-35
a. With a love patterned after the love of Jesus (“as I have loved you”)
b. With a love that is visible to the world (“by this all will know”)
c. Therefore, a true disciple would…
1) Make every effort to get to know his brethren
2) Take advantage of occasions to encourage and grow closer to them (e.g., attending services on Sunday and Wednesday nights)
d. Remember, a disciple is one who wants to become like his teacher
1) Was Jesus willing to sacrifice time and effort for His brethren?
2) Of course, and so will we… IF we are truly HIS disciples!
3. A DISCIPLE IS “ONE WHO BEARS MUCH FRUIT” – John 15:8
a. Notice the word “much” (also found in verse 5)
1) Jesus is not talking about an occasional good deed
2) But a lifestyle which prompts people to glorify God! – Matthew 5:16
b. This is so important, that failure to bear much fruit
will result in being severed from Christ – John 15:1-2
c. How can one be a disciple if he or she is cut off from Christ?
4. The point should be clear: to be a disciple of Jesus Christ means more than just a casual church member.
a. It requires commitment, especially in regards to: The teachings of Christ, The love of brethren, and bearing fruit to the glory of God
b. The kind of commitment involved is seen further when we consider the “high cost” of discipleship demanded by Jesus in Luke 14:25-33…
C. THE COST OF BEING A DISCIPLE
1. JESUS MUST COME FIRST – Luke 14:26
a. Before anyone else, including members of our own family – Matthew 10:34-37
b. Even before one’s own self – Luke 9:23-25
2. WE MUST BE WILLING TO SUFFER FOR CHRIST – Luke 14:27
a. Trying to live godly lives in an ungodly world, we may find that following Christ sometimes involves ridicule and persecution – 2 Timothy 3:12
b. Even if we are blessed to escape such things, we must still be willing to expend time and effort in promoting the cause of Christ in positive ways
3. PUT SIMPLY, WE MUST FORSAKE ALL TO FOLLOW CHRIST – Luke 14:33
a. In other words, Jesus must be King and Lord of our lives
b. Nothing can take precedent over Him and His Will for us
4. This kind of “high cost” of discipleship demanded by Jesus caused many people to turn away from following Him.
a. But Jesus wasn’t trying to attract large crowds, He wanted disciples!
b. Is the cost worth it?
c. YES, for consider some of the rewards of discipleship…
D. THE REWARDS OF BEING A DISCIPLE
1. THERE IS THE PROMISE OF “FUTURE BLESSINGS”
a. We shall be saved from the wrath of God which is yet to come upon the world for its sins – Romans 5:9
b. We can look forward with joyful anticipation of eternity with God, free from sorrow, pain and death – Revelation 21:1-8
2. THERE ARE ALSO “PRESENT BLESSINGS”
a. Jesus offers a peace the world cannot give to calm the troubled heart – John 14:27
b. His words inspire joy to lift our spirits out of any depression – John 15:11
c. He also offers to those who follow Him the abiding love of God, which can cast out fear:
1) John 15:9
2) 1 John 4:18
d. And he makes it possible for us to be members of the family of God, which is able if need be to replace our physical family – Mark 10:28-30
3. There are many other blessings we could mention that are enjoyed by disciples of Jesus; but these suffice to demonstrate that though discipleship is costly, the rewards far exceed the cost!
a. Now that we understand the nature of discipleship, its cost and rewards, I hope that we want to be true disciples of Jesus Christ.
b. But how does one begin? For the answer we return to our beginning text – Matthew 28:19-20
E. THE BEGINNING OF A DISCIPLE
1. IT INVOLVES BAPTISM – Matthew 28:19
a. Why baptism?
1) Remember the goal of discipleship: to be like Jesus
2) He was holy and sinless, yet we are to be like Him
3) Fortunately, baptism is described as an act of faith which puts us in contact with the cleansing blood of Jesus Christ so we can be forgiven
a) Acts 2:38; 22:16
b) Romans 6:3-4
4) It is also the means by which one “puts on Christ” – Galatians 3:27
5) So baptism is the logical starting place for true discipleship!
b. But what is baptism?
1) It is an act of submission which must be preceded by faith in Jesus and repentance for our sins – Acts 2:36-38; 8:36-37
a) This precludes infant baptism
b) For infants are incapable of believing and repenting
2) It is also an act of submission which involves a burial in water, in which one then rises to walk in newness of life through the power of God – Acts 8:38; Romans 6:3-4; Colossians 2:12
a) This precludes sprinkling or pouring as a mode of baptism
b) For neither of these involve a “burial” nor an immersion (which is the meaning of the Greek word “baptidzo”)
3) When done according to the Word of God, baptism then becomes an act of faith on our part which results in a wonderful working of God in our lives!
a) Our sins are washed away by the blood of Jesus – Acts 22:16; Ephesians 5:25-27
b) We are “regenerated” and “renewed” by the Spirit of God so we can now live for God!
c) It is truly a “rebirth” involving both water and the Spirit – John 3:5
2. TEACHING AND OBEDIENCE MUST FOLLOW – Matthew 28:20
a. This brings us back to the very definition of discipleship
b. For Jesus clearly states:
1) We are to be taught (that is, to be learners)
2) We are to observe (that is, to be adherents or doers)
c. In this way we embark on a life devoted to learning and doing all that Jesus commanded
CONCLUSION
A. Only those scripturally baptized and demonstrating the “marks” of discipleship, despite the “costs,” can truly be called disciples of Jesus!
B. Only they can realistically look forward to the “rewards” of discipleship, and take consolation in the promise of Jesus: “and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Mt. 28:20)

KEEPERS OF THE AQUARIUM

It has been said, “Too many Christians are no longer fishers of men but keepers of the aquarium.”

Are we more concerned with keeping up a nice building than seeking the lost? Are we more concerned with winning arguments than winning souls? Are we more concerned with our own agenda than the souls of men? Of course, we need to stand for the truth and contend for the faith (Jude 3), but what about bringing the lost to Christ – have we lost our compassion for the lost? Have we forgotten our mission?

Jesus “came to seek and to save that which was lost” (Lk. 19:10).

Jesus said, “All authority hath been given unto me in heaven and on earth. Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world” (Mt. 28:18-20).

Solomon said, “…he that is wise winneth souls” (Pro. 11:30).

Are we truly “fishers of men?”
